Piano Quartets to choose from
on: August 08, 2015, 07:36:36 PM
I am looking at learning a piano quartet and the four choices given to me are the Brahms, Dvorak, Schuman, and Frank quartet want to learn the easiest. Which one is easiest in terms of Stamina memorization and keeping up and synchronized with the strings.

The piano quartet, invented by Mozart (he wrote two), rarely has an easy piano part. No need to memorize, usually it's better to have the string parts right there in front of you. The Schumann is wonderful, I'm playing it right now (no comments, please, thal. Just shut up, OK?), but it's hardly easy. Great fugal stuff in the finale, a slow movement to die for, a brilliant scherzo, and a rollicking opening movement.

The three Brahms quartets are, well, classic Brahms. Virtuosic and wonderfully complex. I don't know the Franck or the Dvorak, but they're probably not easy. I'd probably start out with the Dvorak; better yet, get the strings to playon of the Mozarts--not that they're easy.

There is also a Shostakovich piano quartet, hard to find, that is quite easy to sightread, believe it or not. Also, there is a Joaquin Turina quartet (1931) that is pretty doable. Not easy but short is a modern-ish quartet by the British composer, William Allwyn. Difficult but superb are the two piano quartets by Gabriel Faure. The C minor is especially evocative.

Have fun!

I like the idea of the Mozart and Stostakovich but the Frank, Brahms, Dvorak, and Shumann are obligatory I have only those choices. I guess I will go with The Frank or the Shumann thanks
