Longfellow's Christmas Carol.
His words still say it all.

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
    Their old, familiar carols play,
        And wild and sweet
        The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And thought how, as the day had come,
    The belfries of all Christendom
        Had rolled along
        The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Till ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
        A voice, a chime,
        A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
        And with the sound
        The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

It was as if an earthquake rent
    The hearth-stones of a continent,
        And made forlorn
        The households born
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

    And in despair I bowed my head;
    "There is no peace on earth," I said;
        "For hate is strong,
        And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!"

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
    "God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
        The Wrong shall fail,
        The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men."

Step Into Christmas

Welcome to my Christmas song
I'd like to thank you for the year
So I'm sending you this Christmas card
To say it's nice to have you here
I'd like to sing about all the things
Your eyes and mind can see
So hop aboard the turntable
Oh step into Christmas with me

Step into Christmas
Let's join together
We can watch the snow fall forever and ever
Eat, drink and be merry
Come along with me
Step into Christmas
The admission's free

Take care in all you do next year
And keep smiling through the days
If we can help to entertain you
Oh we will find the ways
So merry Christmas one and all
There's no place I'd rather be
Than asking you if you'd oblige
Stepping into Christmas with me

Merry Christmas to all !

Here's something you may not have seen before.  It was written by one of my local chorus members many years ago.   Enjoy.

WINTER UNDERWEAR  (sung to the tune of "Winter Wonderland")

Sleigh bells ring..... are ya listenin'
In the lane.... snow is glistnin'
A beautiful sight
They fit me just right
Walkin' in my winter underwear.

Gone away.... are the short ones
Here to stay.... are the long ones
They're fuzzy inside
They tickle my hide
Walkin' in my winter underwear.

In the winter I need extra clothing
To protect me from the wind and cold
And they're such a pretty bright red color
Isn't it a shame they never show.

Later on I'll perspire
As I dream by the fire
But I'll never freeze, from
Exposing my knees.
Walkin' in my winter underwear.

Tash, that card is quite amazing!  Even though Christmas is officially over, I'd like to think of having an extended holiday, at least until the New Years ... then it's back to things as usual.

aw thanks, yep my creation, though i think i'll stick to painting rather than messing around on my computer...
yes extended holiday, mmm uni holidays, a whole 3 1/2 months of holiday, with still 2 months to go!

oh it was really cool i got speakers for the ipod i got for my b'day (3 days ago)! that was probably the coolest thing, and some other random stuff, and a hell of a lot of money between birthday and chrissie, i think i'll be sensible and save it for something, like the piano i can't afford

oh my dream chrissie present, my parents mocked of course- they go when i wake up 'oh your steinway grand is waiting for you in your new apartment- you can get there with your new porsche sports car outside' grrr why was it all invisible?!!

Tash, sometimes I think you are far too humble with your talents! If that creation is just a 'mess around' then I would like to see what you can create if you did it seriously.  :o

I would guess the further end piano legs, or the girl's hands, heh, (unless she's pretty tall for wearing such a dress and the piano bench is closer to the viewer than first impressions would suggest). Nonetheless I do love the mood in the picture. Its a moment in time reserved for that little girl playing the piano for herself. Moving stillness. I like watercolours myself, although I prefer pastels (water soluble with powdering character) over them. Combined they're most powerful though.

yeah the fact that she doesn't have any arms! i dunno what happened to the back leg of the piano...i don't think i could see it in the pic and probably got my proportions and stuff a bit messed up.
it was originally just an experiment playing around with painting on an already coloured background- but when i came up with this result i got the same feeling as you, and then sort of associated that with fur elise- yes i know it's such a 'groan' piece, but the picture just reminded me of some little kid who's learning her dream piece to play, and thus when i repainted it in blue, it's got the fur elise music behind it.
watercolours and oils are probably my faves, i'm not icredibly fond of pastels cos i feel restricted with tone a bit, though that's probably cos i just suck at using them.

Try listening to Für Elise as a parody of classical music, it might come on with a whole new kind of perspective. Then attach the naïve language of the piece to the image of that innocent girl communicating to herself through the piano. Overly obvious theme with simple accompaniment, helping the girl to articulate her emotions for her young rational mind.

I personally find pastels most expressive because of the broad and bold mark they create, and find it exciting to play with them together with water colours. Oil pastels are a little too "stiff" for my liking, and for oil colours I'm simply too impatient and lacking in technical proficiency, so instead I'm happy to deal with aquarel or acrylics.

but you can't get as much detail with pastels! maybe that's just cos i like painting on rather small sizes, but i'll try making some detail and it just all smushes together. acrylics suck too cos they dry too quickly, which is what i love about oils- if i get sick of painting then i can just give it a few days to think about what to do next and then it's ready for the next layers!

I like it!  The age, hair, and dress of the girl do make you think of a young student playing Fur Elise.  I have one concern though: the lid of the piano is opening in the wrong direction.
