Top pop singers
on: September 08, 2015, 07:08:19 AM
Recently I read an interview with star tenor from Germany, Jonas Kaufmann. He answered a question about making it to be famous and mentioned that half of world's top ten pop female singers cannot sing. What do you think, who did he mean?

Yes, they probably can't :) but still somebody who is a trained singer can tell if another singer, even in different music category, is good at what he does. And I was curious who he meant, because top 10 pop singers I can think of sound to me like they can sing. But I am not a singer myself so I am not very competent to judge.
Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Adele - I don't think he meant any of them because they sound to me like they can sing very good.
Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus - I do not like their singing very much, so maybe he meant them...

I had the honor of attending a lecture by the renowned Frederica Von Stade... a world famous mezzo-soprano..

she said that at best...  half the people might like your singing... some of the time...

great lady!

Could mean...
They have a lot of processing done on their voice to correct pitch, add vibrato, etc., so if you hear their voice alone... It sounds like they can't actually sing.

Could be one person's determination of where the cutoff for skill level is.  Technique, endurance, etc.  If it's below that level... They're not professional (in terms of singing) and they "can't sing."

Could be a difference in style, different goals/standards.  Classical singer sees/hears a jazz singing.  Vocal quality is very different.  Therefore, the jazz singer can't sing.

For pop singers, I would imagine the original comment meant that they have crappy vocal technique and rely on processing a lot.  Take that away and they probably don't sound that great, probably average.  Probably way better than someone who doesn't sing though or Joe Blow off the street.  I would imagine pop singers are paraded around, pushed to perform as much as possible to max out the revenue, so they probably put a lot of strain on their voice too (if they're actually singing).

And then add some elitism and that criticizing people is a way to look superior or interesting.  x-person/y-ability?  They're not any good.  Blah, blah, blah... Implying I know the truth, I'm more informed, etc.

though I am no fan of any of these women...  Lady Gaga has an actual voice and does not deserve to be next to J-LO's butt singing or shakira's butt shaking or Katy Perry's butt-less whining and Miley's...butt--whatever!

and as far as weird goes...Gaga is in a league of her own  8)
