Some years ago at a Local cinema, I accompanied a classic silent film using the theatres piano. The film was 35mm so I went along with the projectionist to reherse. On entering the auditorium the piano was nicely positioned to the side of the screen, correctly set to the academy ratio. The print was in great condition, supplied by the BFI. The piano was in fact a very nice 7 ft Bechstein. The piano was well regulated and tuned. There was one issue however. The piano was painted all over bright PINK!
Apparently the piano was obtained almost for free from an old Odeon, the manager of which had a decided on doing this for reasons unknown. Fortunately the soundboard and everything under the lid was left alone. As this was a very nice instrument the theatre did then have the paint removed exposing a beautiful veneer, though not of course in time for my performance. I have returned to do this, though perhaps my playing is now a little less flamboyant.
