Fingers can't reach notes
on: October 04, 2015, 11:50:20 PM
Hey. I'll be giving a recital for my beginner's class in about two months. I've provided a link to the song I want to play and think that I'd be perfectly fine with, except for the distance between some notes. From the first note, my fingers stretch to their capacity. And the 14th measure is hopeless. As you can see, my right hand will be far away, so I won't be able to use that to play left.

I'm also a little concerned that the song is too complicated for me, but unfortunately, we're in the beginning of class, so I don't know how good I'll be by the recital. Fortunately, this is a slow song.

Any advice how I can get those notes?

Hold on. Hold on. I think I posted the wrong link.

Well, I can't find the sheet music for the one I'm following. But the issue is still the same.

As far as difficulty is concerned, take it to your teacher.
For the leaps, you can essentially play it as an arpeggio, or more commonly called "rolling" the chord.
There are a couple ways to do this;
a) Play all the notes in order, separately
or
b) Play the bottom note and "hop" to the rest of the chord and play that unified.
These techniques, with some pedal usually, are what're used by most pianists when intervals are unreachable.
Cheers!

Thank you. I'm not sure if I will stick with this piece for my recital, but your advice will be good to know.
