BTW, its so moving how at the Chopin Competition, the finalists basically get paparazzi. Normally, classical musicians don't get this type of fame.

BTW, AJLong: Rent a mustang when you get into Warsaw. Youll need to drive FAST from the pparrazi....

I think Eric Lu was better than Seong-jin Cho, but that's OK. I mean, I TOLD you they wouldn't award the prize to Americans, even if they WERE the best..

But anyways, things like this always happen.

I still think Dmitry Shishkin and Aimi should've been a little higher thn Yike Yang ::)
And I thought Lu could've been higher, and Hamelin could've been lower, but that's OK, because the judges are very respectable musicians.

Worse than Yike Yang?

BTW, cold=elegance

I think Hamelin got that high because the Chopin Concerto no. 2 Society would sue the Chopin Competition if he didn't.

I think Tony got that high because if he didn't, the super rich music school called Juillard would sue Poland, which is not a rich country.

Okay, stop with your conspiracy theories lol. Cold = cold. That's it. There was nothing elegant about that concerto 1. Tony played beautifully and deserved his spot. Aimi had some crucial mistakes that did her in. Like she shouldn't have played ballade 1. All of them are amazing though. Just accept the facts as facts ;)

Nationality has very little to do with how well or poorly you play. Trifonov is extremely elegant and has a great vibrant sense of color. That's a very mean thing to say about the Canadian winners. Everyone played very well and deserved their place.

Methinks the judges were influenced by Donlad Trump (just kidding).
Why no Mexican in 2nd round? :o

BTW, at least Charles Richard-Hamelin is better than Marc Andre-Hamelin, IMO :)
And I love how they pronounce Richard-Hamelin. They pronounced it in Canadian French, and for the first 2 rounds, I was like, "Who the heck is that?"  (THey said, "Ree-SHARD ah-me-LONE)

For 2020, I'm rooting for Pavel Mikhail Alexei-Aleksandr Konstantinov.

Sorry, this has nothing to do with Seong-jin Cho. Actually, Cho was one of my favorites. This French rant only has to do with this kid who bullied me from NK....

ARghghghgh I still have my mind on some of the people in PianoStreet, which is NOT what I'm supposed to do.

This will make you appreciate Van Cliburn, Rubinsteinmad! His playing at its fineness was remembered for warmth and intimacy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mzs9PBaQA0M

And I agree with AJ, fricking stop with the conspiracy theories!

None of you are old enough to remember the Cold War and how amazing it was that Van Cliburn won the Tchaikovsky competition at the height of very bad relations between the US and the USSR.

to put it in perspective

imagine if ISIS or ISIL or whatever had a piano competition and an Israeli pianist won it...

yeah... it was that big of a deal.

Van Cliburn won in a place where everyone thought he was the enemy.  For him to even enter showed some serious courage.  Whatever you think of his playing... he made his mark in the history of great pianists.

I think he either won becayse
(1) The judges were impressed because they didn't know an American could play 10% as good as an European back then
(2) The USSR wanted to stabilize a little bit the relations between them and the US.
(3) Cliburn learned from a Russian teacher at Juillard, who might've had some good friends in the judges ::)

well...  I will say..  it seems very unlikely, given what we now know of the Soviet Union's regime--and their devotion to winning for mother Russia and all... that the inner party would have allowed such a win by an American. As a person who was raised to believe that communism was in the same class of evil as Hitler...  who was programmed with images of giant mushroom clouds exploding over peaceful US farmlands while listening to the anthem of the Soviet Union (which I always thought was freakin so much better than ours)... and watched movies about teenage boys who defied the Soviet army by hiding in the mountains of enemy occupied Colorado...

it doesn't take much to convince me of that.. 8)

YASSSS. DOWN WITH COMMUNISTS (well, actually, not for china. In China, the so called "Communists" are actually Capitalists now. Back in the day, they murdered the rich and got their money. Yet, they managed to attract  a lot of fuckin followers who mistanley believed some of that money would be shared with them. Eventually, the stupid fuckin communists kept the money and became super-rich, then they changed to capitalist, because they wanted to keep all their riches.)

I still think Cliburn won for purely political reasons, though. I mean, even IF he was te best, the judges wouldn't give the prize to an American if he had no connection/politics.

Also, I agree with you,... Our anthem's tune SUCKS compared to other country's anthem's tunes...

YASSSS. DOWN WITH COMMUNISTS

actually I kinda miss the cold war...  it was very well defined.  East--bad  West--good.  Blue was always the color of the hero and the villain always wore red..  outside of a misunderstanding concerning some missals in Cuba..  a boycott of an Olympics... and Afghanistan (when the Soviets invaded it, that is).. it was pretty uneventful.  It made for some great movies though...  Red Dawn, Firefox, Hunt for Red October... the bad guys were always Russian.

there was a red phone in the whitehouse that went to a red phone at the Kremlin--they pretty much stayed on their side and we stayed on ours.

now.. our enemies are far less obvious and far less noble.

My teacher just assigned me Rachmaninoff concerto 1, so that's the big project right now. I'm going to order the Chopin Polonaises and Scherzi so I can have all of chopin's music. Then I'll start digging deep into a chopin piece.

BTW if you visit(or tour) China before I do, MAKE SURE TO BUY ME THESE THINGS:

Jan Ekier Edition: Solo Piano Version of Concert Works Op. 2, 13, and 14 (or maybe it's just the Solo Piano Version of La Cirem da Mano)

I'll pay you 125% of the money it took you to buy it. Id GLADLY pay that price, because still it's like 99X cheaper than if I went to the Ekier site to order it :P

Wait- how bout we make a deal..... 175%!!!!!!
