Hungarian Rhapsody no.2 OR Mephisto Waltz OR Spanish Rhapsody?
on: October 21, 2015, 03:31:37 AM
Hello everyone!
I am a newcomer to this forum. I am really excited to ask some experienced musicians for some advice with regards to an issue I have. I have included some background as well.
I just began my first year in college, and I have started private lessons with the most renown pianist at my university. Yesterday, I was asked by the faculty to perform in an upcoming honors recital in a month and a half from now. The piece I have been working on most recently (Chopin's Etude op. 25 no. 11) is unfortunately not nearly long enough. The piece needs to be around 10-13 minutes in length.
My professor insisted that I learn something by Liszt. After some brainstorming at my lesson, she gave me three options: Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2, the Mephisto Waltz, or the Spanish Rhapsody. She thinks that I could perform any one of these three given the time I have. I have a week to decide which one to learn.
I do have a relatively good amount of experience with Liszt. I have performed La Campanella, Totentanz (orchestral and solo transcriptions), Hungarian Rhapsody no. 12, Transcendental Etude no. 6, and others, but I am mostly worried about how much time I have to master a larger work, not necessarily the technical aspects.
Which one of these works do you think is the most feasible to learn in such a truncated period of time? After a read through of each, I would say the Hungarian Rhapsody is probably the easiest, while the Spanish Rhapsody is the most difficult. I love each quite a bit, so I would be happy to perform any of these wonderful works.
I really appreciate any and all help.

I'd do the Mephisto. The Spanish Rhapsody is definitely the hardest, HR2 isn't super bad as far as Liszt goes.
Mephisto though only because it's my favorite. As far as technical aspects go, you and your teacher will know how to solve them better than anyone on an internet forum, (presumably) none of whom have heard you play.

rapsodie espagnole is terribly boring unless you cut out the introduction. The Don Juan Fantasy is a little bit better
