Favorite Pianists accrding to Nationality
on: October 25, 2015, 02:57:17 AM
Hi you guys,
what are your favorite pianists from their nationalities?

This list is incomplete; I only listed the pianists that came first into my mind.
American-
Kate Liu, Eric Lu, Simone Dinnerstein, Claire Huangci;  also, +1 to Murray Perahia for his Mozart Concerti
Russian-
Sokolov, Kissin, Trifonov, Cherkassky, Pletnev, Volodos
Canadian--
Andre LaPlante; Charles Richard-Hamelin;
Chile-
Arrau
CCuban-
Jorge Bolet
Japanese-
Ayako Uehara; Aimi Kobayashi;
French-
Thibaudet; David Fray; Helene Grimaud; Pierre Buzon; Alexandre Tharaud;
Polish-
Rubisntein, Zimerman, and Blechacz
Chinese-
Fou T'song; Yundi Li; Yuja Wang (at the Verbier Festival); Wei Luo;
Argentinan-
Martha Argerich
Portuguese-
Maria Jaoa Pires;
Ukrainian-
Anna Federova; Also, +1 to Valentina Lisitsa for making sense/beauty out of really confusing pieces you don't believe me, just try to play some Michael Nyman pieces, and then hear how Valentina plays it. Its a whole world of difference.)
Brazilian-
Nelson Friere
Korean-
Yeoul Eum Son; Seong-jin Cho;
Irish-
John O'Conor
Vietnamese-
Dang Thai Son (who else?)
Georgian-
Mariam Bhatsa.....(don't know the rest of her name :P )
Venezualian-
Gabriela Montero

There are other nationalities ( i. e. British, Italian, etc.), but I cant think of my favorite pianists from them right now.

Wow, are you from or descended of Scandinavia?

I'm from the US (obviously). Are you a fellow Grieg-lover?  :-* Grieg doesn't get enough appreciation on this forum.  :'(

Also from what I hear Merikanto was much more admired for his skills at the organ than the piano...But may I say you do look quite young for your age if you actually heard him play ;D

Japan , tie between Lisa Nakazono

and Hiroyuki Nakayama

both play their own arrangements in recital (Nakazono is particularly adept at Chopin so her arrangements lean that way, Nakayama is more Liszt like in sound and passage construction)

I am from Sweden.  ;D  Of course I like Grieg! Another Norwegian who was from the same era as Grieg, and is shamefully forgotten, was Agathe Bakker-Gröndahl.

Got me there, I have not heard Merikanto either.  :-[  Nor Teresa Carreño. Still, the pianists I mention have a good reputation, wrote wonderful music and are good representants for their countries.

At least you can hear Carreno on piano rolls...She recorded quite a few pieces.

Yes, and I have heard some and I strongly disliked them ... as I have with every other piano roll I've ever heard, so my conclusion is that piano rolls are quite worthless when it comes to artistical expression. They sound very flat and impersonal, like listening to a MIDI file or something.

Hmm.
For an expansion to the list I could say
South Africa: Stephen de Groote
Hungarian: Cziffra
Brazil: Roberto Szidon

An addition to USA: Byron Janis is also quite good.

With regard to Bronnestam's comments about piano rolls, the argument is often valid. However there are exceptions. There's a very fine three volume anthology on Argo (I'm not sure if it was transferred to CD) which includes excellent recordings of Josef Lhevinne and Moritz Rosenthal (among others) and an another outstanding release, A Window in Time (one of two), which is a very musical realization of Rachmaninoff piano rolls supervised by Wayne Strahnke (spelling?) a pioneer in modern piano-player technology.

You. Need. A thing. Called. A. Suicide. Pill. Because. You. Are. So. Dumb. And. Racsist.

A. Somewhat less appealing. Alternative. Is. To. Get. A. Taste. Bud. Transplant.

Leon Fleisher and Gary Graffman are awesome though, I wish they still played. I never heard Leo Ornstein play, but Ive heard his compositions and many of them are very inspirational. (hehehe for some double-racism, have you heard his A la Chinoies? lollolllolllollolllollloll)

Van Cliburn should not be on your list. Claire Huangci and Kate Liu are infinitely superior.

PS @pencilart3 If you're interested, Van Cliburn was gay (and I do not say that as a compliment)

Wait, you can't bark? FYI dogs don't cough; they bark. Which means you need to see the vet ASAP.

Fredrik Ullen: Sweden. An outstanding pianist in both contemporary and older literature (and a scientist, as well).

Interesting, I have never heard this name before. Yes, I live in Sweden, yes, I thought I knew most of the "names" here. Have to check him out.
