What Contemporary Piece should I Play?
on: November 03, 2015, 02:30:42 AM
 ???

I am playing these pieces:

J.S Bach-French Suites nos.2 and 5
Handel-Suite no.5
Chopin-Impromptu no.1
Beethoven- Sonatas Op.14
Debussy-Suite Bergamasque

These are the pieces I feel like playing:
Francois Morel-Etudes de Sonorite: 1 or 2
Kabalevsky-Sonata No.3
Khachaturian-Toccata in e flat minor
Copland-Cat and Mouse
Prokofiev-sonata no.2 mvt 4 or Scherzo Op.12 no.10
Barber-Excursions

Any Suggestions? Feel free to tell me which piece to play(Those pieces don't have to be on the list?)

Absolutely adore this. Jean was more a neoclasicist than Neoromantuc but appreciated past masters like silvestrov and others did , and did not limit self to inspiriation from only one prior period
Here he gets neo varoque neo classical neo roma ntic and neo impressionist while sticking his tongue out to the aesthetic climate of the time in the late 80's. Bassically being a musical smarty snarcky pants

I. Hommage à Handel
II. Hommage à Frédéric Chopin [02:24]
III. Hommage à Domenico Scarlatti ("Couronné par Beethoven et par Mendelssohn, sous le regard complice de Debussy") [05:14]
IV. Hommage à Maurice Ravel [08:34]
V. Petit hommage à la Musique Contemporaine [12:09]
VI. Hommage à Adolphe Adam (de l'Institut) [14:24]

Thanks for the suggestions! Since the contemporary piece is for a piano competition, they only allow pieces by composers who died in 1950 or after. Also, the time limit is 4 minutes. When I have time, I will listen to the pieces. Thanks!

you're welcome, when i saw 'contemporary' i certainly did my best to not make the mistake many old heads make trying to say ravel , debussy, and the like are 'contemporary'. to best of my knowledge, all i listed adhere to DOD post 1950 and may excerpts are within or performable within reason your 4 minute time frame
