Pianists and Fashion
on: November 11, 2015, 07:22:45 PM
Who are some Fashion-genius pianists?

Yuja Wang and Lola Astonova seem concerned about their dresses :P

Oh, and can you give me a list of pianists who wear high-heels at their concerts?

I wonder why you need that

Yundi Li has recently been wearing really sparkly outfits to concerts...
oh and Julian Zhi Chao Jia, I think he's invented an entirely new style of fashion altogether

Why? "oh, um, for... scientific purposes......."
No one gives a sh-t about Lola Astanova though... but you're right about the "concern" for fashion... Lola Astanova has an Instagram where she posts about 5 pictures a day O_o

Yundi Li has recently been wearing really weird, sparkly outfits to concerts...
and Richard Kastle is an absolute fashion genius ;D
oh and Julian Zhi Chao Jia, that guy... I think he's invented an entirely new style of fashion altogether

lol

But Lola Astanova was SO GOOD at age 12!

She still is, if you watch her videos with HD Audio ::) But I don't think she improved much from when she was 12 ::)

Oh, and I WAS ABOUT TO TALK ABOUT YUNDI, but I was like, Nah.......

I think Yeoul Eum Son has a good taste for choosing dresses, but she doesn't use "fashion" dresses  :P

Oh, and Valentina spicily uses high heels in the Prokofiev Sonata #7.

I'd imagine that heels would make pedaling difficult.
For female pianists, you have much more options.
Male pianists are kinda limited in that sense. But I like wearing sports jackets so it's all good  ;D

I think Maksim Mrvica wears weirdly.
But I don't think hes a completely "Classical" pianist.

Not at all.

He made a legit recording of the Liszt Ballade 2 though but it still has a few cuts in it I think):

Some of Miss Wangs outfits are more suitable for the street corner outside of the concert hall.

She has cheapened the classical world by dressing up as a slag.

I see you guys have not seen Khatia Buniatishvili. She always wears stunning dresses in her concerts and looks really nice and sexy. She could be a little skinnier for my taste but still hot.

Plus I loved the dresses that Kate Liu wore in her performances in Chopin competition, especially the white one.

Yes, that is indeed true sometimes. But ... she has such an amount of sex appeal like watch this:

that I can forgive her easily:-) And this says a woman ;)

So your "superior knowledge" causes you to love the Padarweski Concerto?
And your "superior knowledge" makes the Grieg Concerto a failure?

No, the classical world was cheap even before that.
And her wonderful playing makes up for her terrible *cough, cough, vomit* dresses.

I do think that she dresses like a homeless person, though...

Thal has referred to his use of such services on many occasions before, so lets just take his word for it ;)

When you have reached your teens and start to become more widely listened and formulate opinions of your own, then you can debate with me on equal terms.

So there's only one such agency in Le fin des Graves, then?

As to Wang, I've never seen her perform live and couldn't care less what she wears, being interested as I am only in her playing which, at best, is quite decent.

Actually, I know better to not listen to other people's opinions, especially teachers'.

And my opinions on the Grieg and the Padarweski were "formulated" by myself. And it seems that they are not wrong opinions; few pianists bother to play the Padarewski, while the Grieg is cherished by the world's leading pianists.

If popularity were the judge of quality, i guess the Spice Girls are amongst the greatest singers ever.

I am not convinced that the Grieg is cherished by the Worlds leading pianists. Perhaps they play it because they know it will sell and perhaps they don't play the far more exciting Schytte, because they think it won't or they don't have the fingers.

re Thal's opinions on concerti, that seems a very strange argument, as the world's opinion tells him to venerate the Schumann and Grieg. Unless you're going to argue his "individuality" consists of a perverse reaction to conventional opinion..

I don't mind the Grieg too much, but the Schumann.. there are hundreds of other concerti I'd rather hear.

Wait a minute, isn't this the wrong thread?  ;D

The Grieg is one of the composer's least engaging pieces, for all its popularity; I once embraced deep disrespect for Grieg as a consequence of it but quite mistakenly because I knew so little of the rest of his work at that time.

Likewise, one has only to listen to the Schumann Concerto along with a few of his best works to realise what a comparatively dead duck it is ( a handful of gestures in its mniddle movement notwithstanding); Schumann not only could but did do far better than this!

Alicia de Larrocha's playing was shallow; yet she was not American.

It is not a matter of taste dimwit, it is a matter of playing what puts bums on seats and food on the table.

Only a fraction of the Worlds leading pianists could cope with the Schytte. Ask Oleg Marshev.
