Questions about video recording

I've enjoyed reading posts here about recording, but I'm interested specifically in how to video record.  Will the video camera in my smartphone do the job?  Do I need a tripod?  How to attach it to the tripod?  What kind of tripod?  I have a Zoom H4N which does fine for the audio, but now I'd like to do video recording.  Any advice/recommendations?
