Better education than Grandpa? [Bob asks]

I was reading this thread

and I remembered hearing the idea that the teaching and music education today for most college-level students is just about what students at the top music schools were getting years ago (1940-50's roughly).  Because those teachers taught a number of students who taught a number of students and this pryamid of people has brought the ideas out to a larger population.

Have you heard this before?

I think it is exactly the opposite
I know people who graduated from top school in the 40's and 50's and there's almost no comparison with the poor musical teaching of today
From piano, harp to composition today schools are far more less professional and serious, they teach things superficially or completely ignore certain important musical matters and many tearchers are poor teachers frustrated wannabe musicians

Grandpa has way better education than us and not only in music
I was looking at my father math and biochemistry book from high school
They were comprehensive and complete and not wordy or prolix, they were explained in a detailed and clear manner and students really understand what they were learning
Have you seen high schools book today?
My father himself graduated in chemistry said that he would have never understand these matter so well or at all if he had studied them with nowadays books and nowadays teachers
It's just another illusion so that us puppets of society don't react against the gouverment, so we're said how more free we are, how more intelligent we are, how our schools are better

Schools suck nowadays as ever and we're living in the worst era possible for what concerns education despite the fact that now many kids can afford to be aducated
Quantity is improved, quality is worsened

Perhaps this is true, but on the other hand, the availability of information now is far greater than it was even 10 years ago. Take this forum, for example - people can learn from Bernhard's posts, or Chang's methods, or anyone else who decides to contribute. What's different is that one has to put their own determined effort into seperating the bad info from the good info. Likewise with Chemistry - if you're given a bad Chemistry book, you can always go on Amazon.com and buy a good one (though you'd have to find out what the good one is). It's simply a matter of how determined you are.

Well, this all goes for "free" nations where information is easily available. But that's a different matter entirely.
