Technique advice needed here
on: December 17, 2015, 03:23:16 PM
Hello everybody  :)
My name is Guy and i'm new here .

I would really appreciate if somebody can give me an advice on some piece I've been trying to play for a long time .

I need a technique advice for the right hand "run" that start in 1:01 .
I know the sheet music for this preformence and I'm training with a metronome everyday attempting to achive that "running" technique and eventually play this piece .

Thanks to the helpers  :)

Hi :) I suggest to work on short fragments, even shorter than one bar, slowly lead to the target speed and connect them little by little. It's really long passage, so be patient and don't go to further sections before you can play previous ones correctly. I think that metronome can be useful but only in lower speeds. You have to count in your head. When you exercise in slow tempo, try to put an accent on the first note in each group, then try to change a note, for example emphasize the second. Dotted rhythm, triplets or bigger irregular groups (5,7) also can be helpful - you can train in many different ways.
Bach: WTC II, P&F in A minor
Beethoven: Op. 2 No. 3
Chopin: Op. 25 No. 12, Scherzo Op. 39
Prokofiev: Toccata Op. 11

Everyone's going to tell you something different based on where they come from/what their goals are, and they're all right for the most part - depending on what they want.

Think about what kind of sound you're going for, then base your approach off of that.

Anyway, I would actually start by bunching groups of notes up into chords, and playing the "chords" at tempo, just to get a feel for where your hands need to be and how to align your body. After you've done that, do whatever you need to to break it up, whether it be finger exercises or "rolling" your arm weight between your fingers (that's what I do, it sounds even and it's so nice hehehe). Be careful that you do not get lazy though and kind of "mumble" everything; the final product must be clear and articulated.

If you have the capacity to already play the run, when doing the chordal practice, do it hands together.
If not, then stay far, far away from hands together haha
I am trying to become Franz Liszt. Trying. And failing.
