Of these two pieces; 20 Regards sur l'Enfant-Jesus, and the Catalogue D'oiseaux; which do you prefer?  Which do you think is the greater work?

I prefer 20 regards.
I never had the courage to listen to the whole bird catalog.

20 regards.  Though I admire the Catalogue des Oiseaux, the Regards I find much more moving. I also think they are much more audience friendly.

I love them both, but Vingt regards is indeed a more performable work.

Messiaen is a composer I like very much.

Did any of you play anything from "catalogue d'oiseaux"? I played "Traquet rieur". It was very difficult to memorize, complex chords and irregular rhythms all the time.  But when I finally got it it was really ecstatic to play.

I think the "vingt regards" are more often played. Maybe because these pieces have more "conventional" melodies and form than the catalogue d'oiseaux.
