Repertoire Choices
on: December 23, 2015, 06:28:04 PM
Hi all!

I'm participating in a "WSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival" and a Chopin Competition this year. But I'm having trouble choosing the pieces I want to play! For Solo and Ensemble you get to play a solo (or ensemble, but in my case a piano solo) of your choice from a pre-selected list subdivided into three classes: Class A, B, and C...If you choose a Class A piece and perform well enough the adjudicator may send you to state to perform there for another adjudicator. There are no prizes, but it's nice to get the comments from other people other than yourself and piano teacher.

I'm considering a few pieces that I've picked out from the list for s&e but I can't choose!
1. Chopin Waltz Op. 18 E flat
2. Chopin Prelude Op. 28 No. 16
3. Liszt Liebestraum No. 3
4. Sibelius Romance Op. 24 No. 9
Here's the link to the list: https://scripts.wsmamusic.org/music_list/pdf/Events_7000.pdf.zip

Now for the Chopin competition, you can choose any Chopin work as long as it's 10 minutes or less. I was thinking the Barcarolle. I wanted to play the Polonaise-Fantasie, but that piece obviously exceeds the time limit.

What do y'all think?!

For your big piece, the Barcarolle could work. So could a number of polonaises, the second and third ballades, scherzi 2 and 3, etc.
There's a lot to choose from, just choose the one you can play best. If that's the Barcarolle, great; if not, then whatever it is, so be it.

The Ballade #1 is under 10 minutes (usually). I agree with chopinlover01, the Barcarolle, Polonaises, 3rd Scherzi, etc. are also very beautiful.

I like all of the pieces on your list, but I especially love Liszt's Liebestraum nr. 3.

Op.18 is a very long piece(9 pages with repeat signs everywhere). If your hands are big, this piece would be not as tricky. However, then you have the grace notes to worry about.
Op.28 no.16 is hard. I usually get nervous, so I sometimes miss a note or two during fast notes.Which pieces are you playing?
LIszt Notturno No.3's cadenzas are a pain. A very big piece and hard piece. Harder than the Op.18 Waltz.
Sibelius Romance is a great work for people with big hands. I adore this piece a lot.

Op.28 no.16  and liebestraume are probably the hardest. Look through the pieces first. Do you think
you can play one of these pieces well in a period of time?

And choose the Barcarolle. I love it thougn it is very difficult(sixths and double thirds).
Beethoven Op 2/2
Chopin Op 20, maybe op 47/38
Debussy Etude 7
Grieg Op 16
Want to do:
Chopin Concerti 1 and 2
Beethoven Waldstein
Ravel Miroirs

Ah, cool, I'm in the same festival. I'm doing the Granados Spanish Dance 5, which is easy, but hey, I'm doing like 13 things. I say if you have the musicality, go for the Liszt. If not, maybe some of the more modern stuff?

hilarious

sockpuppets everywhere trying to sound like real musicians

posting about how many pieces they play

they should make it a rule

you must make a vid of you playing every piece you claim to be able to play and post it in the audition room

LOL   it would be so funny to see all those lists then.

It'd be funny to see how many people you've attempted to "bust", including myself via a PM, are real trolls.
Surely you've got something better to do than calling people fake (without any sort of cleverness, I might add)?

The Red Violin is a porno movie.

No one warns Emily; she just watches it and BAM, after Pope's concert, there he is nude having an orgasm with his violin.

Poems of Ecstasy – Scriabin’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

The great early 20th-century composer Alexander Scriabin left us 74 published opuses, and several unpublished manuscripts, mainly from his teenage years – when he would never go to bed without first putting a copy of Chopin’s music under his pillow. All of these scores (220 pieces in total) can now be found on Piano Street’s Scriabin page. Read more
