The quickest and easiest way is always to learn from a qualified teacher.

Amen to that!! It should also be mentioned that learning to read music is never fast nor easy. It will take time, dedication and the help of a good music teacher in order for the student to excel.
Sure you can always learn an instrument on your own but it will take you much longer and you'll have to be satisfied with being mediocre at best.
