Opinions on playing transcribed pieces not originally intended for solo piano?
on: February 14, 2016, 05:24:37 PM
There have been a lot of times where I found a song I wanted to play on the piano but it wasn't originally composed for solo piano so I had to look elsewhere. This includes but isn't limited to:
Chopin's 2nd Piano Concerto
Schubert's Fantasy in F Minor
Several of Mozart's Piano Concertos
Pretty much all of Tchaikovsky's Symphonies
I don't know how to describe it; it just doesn't really feel right I guess? And if it wasn't originally intended for the piano then there are bound to be parts in the transcription that are going to be tougher than they should be. But what do you guys think?

Nothing wrong with transcribed pieces. Most pianists play it (I guess).

i love them. bring em on, more the merrier, some composers excel at this genre and also in paraphrasing (which will usually include some original composing and reharmonization),they're great fun, and the piano world would be a much duller place without the lot.
it's actually more of what I am collecting lately.

Schubert's F minor fantasy? As in,
this one
? Written for 4 hands, unless you speak of solo piano arrangements, of which there are many of varying quality.
As for the question, I say as long as its arranged well, then by all means!

For me, playing transcriptions of orchestral music, chamber music, or anything else but a piano, helped me discover a lot of new music when I was younger. It also gave me the feeling it was alright for a non-conducter to give my own opinion on how such pieces where to be played, and also helped me form a more thought trough opinion about a piece.
