resources for bach

Hi, I'm about to start playing the French Suite No. 5 by Bach. Are there any good performance resources available that I can utilize? Anything on history, technique, etc. is welcome. Thanks!

Can you give some more specific advice. What exactly would you like to know about it? Listening to the piece is a great way to start getting acquainted with the ornaments, but stay away from Glenn Gould's recordings right now. He was a great pianist (my favorite) but he wasn't concerned a bit about playing ornaments and music in general as it was written. If he thought a certain ornament didn't sound right for him, he would just leave it be.

Are there any good guides for self-teaching myself the piece? I would like to know about the historical style / purpose that Bach wrote the piece first (context) and then performance tips (how to play certain parts, fingering, other technical advice, style).

For your consideration:

1. Henle and/or the Peters editions might be useful.

2. "Selected keyboard works" edited by Palmer.

3. "Anthology of Baroque Keyboard Music" edited by Hinson.

You may want to read up on baroque dance suites and baroque keyboard fingering.  Listen to various performers play the French Suites.
