How to discover new music?
on: March 20, 2016, 10:01:54 PM
Hi guys,

Maybe it is a stupid question but I really feel like expanding my repertoire, speaking listening-wise. So I want to listen to new music to discover new music and see if there is any which I also like (which certainly must be the case). I just don't know where to start. There is so much.

I like Renaissance, Pre-Baroque, Baroque, Classical, Early-Romantic and Late-Romantic as far as I know. I don't like "Middle-Romanticism" very much, but who knows. Where to start? How to discover which music to listen to?

By the way, I'm already familiar with the standard repertoire, but mostly by only a few performances. I would like to listen to different performances too. And not just piano music, everything but opera. I want to approach that differently.

Thanks in advance!

Marijn

There are many different ways to do this.
You can get a Liszt of composers from any time period from Wikipedia and simply go through that Liszt on YouTube.

That's what I do. There are also a few channels on there that are dedicated to the arcane pieces of not well know composers.

As for opera... That's simple. Go to your local theatre.
Sometimes I can only groan and suffer and pour out my despair at the piano.

you can learn a surprising amount of music by just browsing through old piano street topics and listening to pieces you don't know on youtube.
