Fugue (?) in 2 keys?
on: April 16, 2016, 12:09:33 PM
A teacher colleague of mine asked me if I was aware of a piece, she thought a fugue, written with sharps in one hand and flats in the other.  She thought it was perhaps called "Cat's Fugue," but I only know of the Scarlatti with that name, which is not in 2 keys.  She apparently performed this piece years ago, but her scores were destroyed in a flood and she's trying to track down what it was.  I told her I'd help her search.

Any thoughts?

Many composers have written bitonal pieces (Bartòk and Stravinsky, for instance) but for the moment I can't think of a bitonal fugue. I'll keep it in the back of my mind: maybe something with pop up in my memory.

This is driving me nuts. I listened a few months ago to a CD with a bunch of polytonal studies on it which were like paraphrases on some Bach fugues and inventions. Can not for the life of me remember the composers name.

Mmm... I think I can help. Was it 'the Polycats Waltz'?

Grade 4 piece, RH with 3 sharps, LH with 3 flats, then in the middle section, the hands change key signatures???

perfect_pitch,

That sounds promising.  I'll pass it on.  Do you happen to know the composer?

Thanks.

The composer of the Polycat Waltz is Laurence Whiffin: Cat Pieces (1985)

Anton Reicha's 36 Fugues contain some incredible innovations in terms of form and tonality. You can find the score in IMSLP, maybe the Fugue you look after is among them.
Currently on:
Bach - WTK Book 1 n. 5-6
Beethoven - Sonate Pathétique
Rachmaninov - Polichinelle op. 3
Studies from Clementi and Moscheles
Telemann - Fantasias 1-2 in D
Haydn - b minor Sonata

After much searching I found what I mentioned in the post above. I last listened to it in september apparently so it took quite some time to track down.

Rodion Shchedrin — Polyphonic notebook

Not that it really helps but I felt committed to remembering. It's not polytonal either, but I'm just happy I found it.

It stuck with me because no. 12 imitates one of Bachs inventions which happened to be the one which gave me RSI.
