"brilliant" concertante works for solo
on: April 20, 2016, 04:07:43 PM
I really love this style of piano, the "brilliant" style (no, chopin didnt invent it! so stop calling it "chopinesque"!!!). Here are a few examples:

Basically, I want a list of brillante concertante (what you would expect in a concerto, except for solo piano) works like this! From major or unknown composers, I don't mind..

I think it's my favorite style of piano writing. It's so fun. :) :)

i have quite the big subcollectionof these, a lot of the best stuff is not recorded or was at one point and now lost. i think i even have a rare early part of 20th century book dedicated to just this type of works by a bunch of composers even i had never heard of, so it grew on me and i pick these things up everytime i come across one.

here's a fav of mine

HAHAH! ZOMG!

US anthem in brillante style? That is SOOOO cool. ahahah

I've actually thought of doing that. When I get good enough, I'd love to do anime covers in brillante form. :D :D

**need to find where i stashed a link to a cool score of a brillante paraphrase on a stephen foster work, it's in my 100 year or so old ditson anthology of these brillante salon works, but i think there's a google books project link somewhere...

Well, who doesn't like virtuosic, bright, elegant and sophisticated sounding pieces?:-)
If only my fingers wanted to join this party in ;D :

Though not so sure about the style of the first one, bc it uses a lot of lower register which is not typical of "brilliant" style ::)

Pretty sure I shared this with you already, but this is some good sh*t. There's also a lot of good in Rach's Op. 3:

Beware, everything gets cross-checked  ;)

I really like that TE no 2 by Liszt. Maybe somebody here posts it one day.
I wonder how it sounds when played by a "normal" person (not some famous virtuoso).

i was paraphrasing

but okay

I want to play music from my favorite composers, but also be somewhat realistic. I do love pieces like Chopin 3rd sonata or his Allegro de Concert,"

there's some strong shades of the early "brilliant" chopin in the 3rd sonata as well, especially in the first and second movements.

Well, it may be a matter of perception or defition... If you are talking about brilliant piano writing in the Hummel style, then sure, that is always welcome ;)

But if you are talking about a specific style of music, then no thanks...I especially cannot stand pieces like his op. 2...

henselt is so weird. his early works are awesome but his later ones,.....are sooooooooo bland.

The best of his 4 rondos:

Better than his more mature op.16, and it has nothing to do with me only being able to play op. 5  :-X :-X :-X

Immature and his later stuff is way better, but it's still better than what most of his senior contemporaries (by decades) were doing with the genre at that time.

At the time I made this thread i wasn't a big fan of Liszt but after playing a few of his stuff it's quite clear that he was an absolute master of this genre.

I don't know if this counts, but try Gottschalk's Tarantella. There's a piano transcription by the composer himself.

Really enjoyed the theme and variations! Love how much love you give to obscure composers.

Studied at the Warsaw conservatory under Josef Elsner, making him Chopin's junior!

Not bad for a 15 year old!

Kinda weird how there's no Liadov yet!
