Haha don't even get me started on this... Just thinking about it makes my head float away!
I don't know what I'd play, but in the past competitions I really liked it when people chose to play:
- Mazurkas op. 56
- Impromptu op. 36
- Scherzo op. 54
- Polonaise-fantaisie op. 61
- Fantasie op. 49
- Rondo op. 16
- Ballade op. 38
- Bolero op. 19
Damn I think I should stop now before I list every piece he wrote...

What about you? If you chose to ask this I bet you thought about this question quite a bit...

Pretty cool rep, I'm glad other people agree that the impromptu op. 36 is under-played.
BUT HOW CAN YOU LIKE THE 3RD SCHERZO MORE THAN THE 4TH?!
Also, I think this rep is presenting too much of "young Chopin" and not enough of "mature and philosophical Chopin" (except for the mazurkas and the fantasie there isn't really anything from his really mature phase).
I liked it when pianists took on his more complicated pieces - 4th ballade and scherzo, polonaise fantaisie, 3rd sonata, baracrolle... I think these pieces really represent the golden age of his life (it's too bad he died so young, who knows what else he could have written...)

Now I'm curious, are you actually planning on entering the competition, or are you just studying competition repertoire for self motivation? If you are planning on entering, I'm really impressed :)

Maybe I like it better because of the middle section and the coda. :)
And do you think I have time for another piece in stage III? The mazurkas are like 12 minutes.

The preludes take 35-40 minutes, the mazurkas about 12 minutes, I think you can squeeze the barcarole or something like that in there...

In scherzo 4 too many people breeze by the opening pages to get to

"THE middle part"

which I find quite pretty, but I don't find another melody like the opening one in another scherzo. I also love the part with the third trills. :)

Yeah you maybe have time for that or just play all 3 nouvelles etudes or something

schubert wrote so much music, quality stuff too. unlike chopin. quality stuff but not enough to sustain an entire lifetime of study.

but thats besides the topic, if you dont like chopin? why post?  ::) ::) ::) ::)
like what's the point of declaring your dislike in a thread obviously dedicated to worshiping his music? "oh look at me guys im so different becuz i no like the guy almost everyone likes"

we get it.
now piss off and let the chopinists enjoy their thread

I find it funny that the hardcore Chopinists seem to enjoy the later scherzi over the 1st and 2nd one. I will reiterate that the 4th is by far the most beautiful written. Middle section is beautiful, but the simplicity and childlike playfulness of the main theme is just otherworldly. I honestly wish Chopin wrote more "happy" music, he was pretty good at it!
They also like the obscure mazurkas. I learned the op. 50 no.3 a few months back, it's prolly one of my fav mazurkas.

What will I play for a Chopin Piano competition?

Perhaps I will learn Chopin Sonata 2 Funeral March Movement.

and if I get into the second round:

Surprise the judges by playing...the Chopin Sonata 2 Funeral March Movement,
again.

That would just shock the world.

i would troll the judges so hard. would submit a std lit plan and then when on stage i'd bust out the fugue,  Balakirev transcription of the 2nd mvmnt of the Chopin concerto, then right after that go right into the impromptu on themes of Chopin, close w the cantible.

*one of the best recordings of this little diddy i've come across so far on the interwebs
