Which animal would you rather fight
on: May 02, 2016, 07:22:10 PM
Rules:

No weapons, and you have to fight to the death.  And if it's a water animal you have to fight in the ocean

Bear
Gorilla
Pack of wolves
Cheetah
Crocodile
Shark
Whale
Giant squid
Lion
Tiger
Me with a gun

Personally I think I'd have my best chances with a cheetah

I think cheetah is the way to go, it has a relatively weak and fragile body (the prices you pay in exchange for speed...). Maybe a crocodile.
Definitely not you.

croc or cheetah. cheetah is not really aggressive and a croc is one dimensional in fighting there is a way to defend yourself w a croc . The others are you crazy? There is absolutely nothing you can do w an approaching hungry giant squid and a gorilla will tear your face apart.

You.  You're domesticated, probably out of shape compared to the animals.

But on that... Maybe these are zoo animals?  Maybe they're not the fierce, wild fighter I pictured at first.  Maybe they lived in a zoo their whole life.

After that I'd go with the whale.  I'm picturing the use of a harpoon.   Just chase it around casually with a boat and stab it with a harpoon now and then.  I'll also make myself captain of the ship so I don't have to do much work.  My crew can be the ones who actually throw out the harpoons but I'll take credit for it.  (This whale will be overpopulated too, so it's necessary to thing down the herd.)

After that... Maybe a bear, but one just coming out of hibernation so it's really zoned out and disorientated.  And old.  It's be an old bear.  It's not going to make it another season.  So I just poke it with a stick and it keels over.  Kind of like this....

Oh wait... No weapons?  What about the animals?  Do they have weapons, or are they declawed and defanged?

Id fight all those marine animals at once. They are no match for me on land ;) Or rachmaninoff_forever with a gun, here you even can have a paintball gun instead of a water gun, some fun before death. :)

Wolf-dog mixes, yes.  But as far as I know there's no record of a wild wolf attacking a human in the last couple of hundred years anyway.

There are folk tales from Eastern Europe of wolves chasing sleds, etc.  If even true, there is speculation that may have been a different species.

Just because wolves happen to be less common now due to hunting and domestication doesn't make them any less dangerous in the wild. They're still pack predators so I wouldn't take my chances with that.
I'll take my chances with a shark, assuming I have scuba gear or something to breathe underwater with. Sharks hate human flesh and have extremely sensitive gills.

You didn't specify what kind.
You also didn't say whether I was fighting it on land or underwater. Either way, a boxer's punch to the gills is often enough to seriously disable a shark.

I also wondered about the pack of wolves.  A pack for them while everything else is individual.

I might go with a shark or giant squid, esp. the squid.  Those things are very rarely seen and they live deep in the ocean.  So... Maybe I'm fighting them right now.  I'm just going to stay up here on land fight the giant squid... who stays deep in the ocean.  The loser is the one who dies of old age first I guess.  But we're still "fighting."

Otherwise... Why are we assuming *we're* going to meet the shark or squid on their territory?  How about the shark and squid come up here?  They're easy enough to fight on land.  Just let them flop around and wait for them to suffocate.  It's just as unfair to plop a human in the water and expect the fight to be fair.  We're stuck having to be near the surface all the time and can get around in water only a little better than they can get around on land.

Actually, I'm also picturing a big shark, something like a great white.  Maybe it's a little baby shark or something tiny.  And if you're wearing chain metal, it's not that big of a deal.

I forgot the whale.  Shark, squid, whale... Same thing.  Whale-wise... Is this a big blue whale... or a killer whale... maybe a narwhal?

Or what if we're out in space?  Everyone's disadvantaged then.

Our greatest strengths are endurance and intelligence. Our ability to use tools (weapons) is a consequence of the latter, why take it away? Bare handed humans don't stand a chance against these killing machines.   :-\

No, that's completely wrong.

A wolf accustomed to humans would be far more dangerous.

There is no doubt a wolf would be a serious threat to a man.  They are larger, stronger, faster than a German Shepherd, and unlike a domestic animal their survival depends on efficient killing.

But in North America it never really happens.  Wolves avoid humans.  Apparently in Europe this is not as true.

Friends of mine who live in Alaska say wolves are very smart.  You can observe them if you are not armed, and they are never a threat.  If you are carrying a rifle you cannot get within 500 meters of them, usually not even that close.

Many cases in Europe where wolves are known to kill people are suspected Rabies cases. Any animal with Rabies is pretty dangerous...

Wolves are wonderful animals and not much of a threat if you know how to act around them. In fact that applies to most of the animals on the list. Sharks are a bit of a problem because some of them have a habit of tasting whatever they encounter even if they don't really hunt people...

The answer is found here - https://helenegrimaud.com/wolf-conservation-center. I make no comment about it one way or the other, except that perhaps the reason that you didn't know about it might be because you're more interested in female pianists from Ukraine than in those from France.
