What are you reading?
on: May 23, 2016, 11:46:07 PM
I'm sure some of you here are avid readers. Right now I'm reading " Why I Write " by George Orwell. Looking forward to hearing about what you guys and girls are into.

Best,

AJ

I don't read nearly as much as I should but I am trying to get through "Harmony and Voice Leading 2nd Edition" whenever I can stomach it. I also recently attempted reading Infinite Jest, David Foster Wallace's massive epic. It was really pretty good and very interesting and I should really try it again when I have time.

As for Orwell, I have read Animal Farm which I found to be fairly good and interesting, but I've heard that Orwell's Essay writing is actually better than his fiction, despite being better known for the latter. How are you finding it AJ?

Great choices, Josh! Send me a link to that book on Harmony sometime. Orwell's fictional works are essentially political essays in disguise. He was a brilliant writer in general, and I can't make a good comparison of his two genres until I read 1984 and a few more of his essays (I ordered " All Art is Propaganda " yesterday.) The book I'm reading right now is great. The subject matter is thick, but it gives a lot of food for thought. Orwell really had a great grasp of how a government system should run. He didn't lean towards one political party in the extreme. Because of that, he seemed to see everything through a sharp lens of intellectual clarity. We could use more politicians like that.

Best,

AJ

I have to say that in the end the "Great" Dickens did not meet my Expectations...

I prefer my novelists Russian and my playwrights English...

The Brothers Karamazov.  ;)

Oh, I am reading this one too right now:-) At least I am trying to bc it seems not a good idea to read it in bed just before falling asleep. I am around page 48 now and on evenings before I read it I am trying to remember who is who and why is this character being introduced bc Dostoyevsky does, as always, add a wiiiiiide context to every detail. Which I love. I have read Crime and Punishment and Idiot before and lots of his short stories but with this one I am really kind of slow to process::)
And I am also reading a book on climbing expedition to K2 in 1986, which took many lives. There is however no edition in English available of this one, too bad for you guys!

I've been meaning to read The Brothers Karamazov for a while but haven't got around to it. Without giving too much away can anyone give me an idea of what I would be in for?

I am reading The Missionary Position by Christopher Hitchens in which he exposes Mother Theresa for the deluded evil witch that she most certainly was.

To keep a balance, this will be followed by "I am with you always" by G.Scott Sparrow which contains many stories of modern encounters with Jesus.

Must keep an open mind.

How do you like it? I tried reading it a few years ago but it found it way too boring (even though I'm a fan of the genre).

Right now I'm about to finish 'Physics of the Future' by Michio Kaku; Thinking about re-reading 'A Brief History of Time' after that.

I watched a video of Michio Kaku talking about random ideas; I found him insufferably pretentious.
I tried reading Lort of the Rings but it had too many useless descriptions which bored me to tears.
