I realise I should like Medtner more than I do but I just have trouble completely getting into his music. I respect him at any rate, don't get me wrong and have never actually disliked anything of his I've heard but I've generally found Scriabin far more rewarding.
Care to see my playing?

For me Scriabin and Medtner are complete opposites. Medtner's more rigid and 'intellectual' (not calling Alex dumb lol), and Scriabin's more spontaneous and 'instinctive'

if ya know what i mean
actually nah I dont even know what i mean

But yeah it's understandable ;D

I wanna play this...one day...:

IMHO, scriabin's magnum opus

Glad to see someone else has decided to take a plunge into this genius's music. 8)

There's so much to love when it comes to Medtner's repertoire that it's really hard to pick only a few works as 'favorites', but I'll bite:

There was an even lovelier version of the Sonata Reminiscenza a few years ago on You Tube, but it was taken down. :(

Best,
M.W.

Great!  This is 1st time I heard this.  I like this much better than the Rachmaninov sonata #1 (1908).  I heard Rach sonata #1 performed live a couple months ago by Peter Orth along with Scriabin 24 preludes OP 11 (1896).  I bought the Orth CD of this.  I love the Scriabin preludes but I never got into the sonata #1 very much.  I ordered on Amazon this Medtner sonata #7 (1911) performed by Kholodenko (it's so sad about his family).  Thanks!

I really enjoy his entire output. The Fairy Tales seem to be exceedingly special in their vision, though.

Best,

I love Op. 39, and have learned part of it.  Some describe it as rambling music, but I don't see that at all.  It is very organic to me, like a stroll through the woods.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Medtner and Scriabin are both wonderful, just different :)

This one just never gets old for me...the way Medtner handles rhythm is truly special and wonderful. I think that's what really got me hooked.

Also of course his piano concertos are amazing too...

Night Wind Sonata, Piano Quintet, and Sonata Romantica are my favorite pieces by him. Sonata Ballade is awesome too.

Someday I'll tackle Medtner ...
Practicing:
Bach Chromatic Fantasie and Fugue
Beethoven Sonata Op. 10 No. 1
Shostakovich Preludes Op. 34
Scriabin Etude Op. 2 No. 1
Liszt Fantasie and Fugue on BACH
