Prokofiev sonata No. 3 help
on: June 10, 2016, 10:33:50 AM
Hi all!

I've started work on Proks 3rd sonata for my second year recital and I seem to have hit a bit of conundrum with the development section. My main issue is fingering specifically the chromatic thirds in the left hand, is there any decent fingering suggestions available? I know everybody's hands are different ect but I think some guidance would be much appreciated. Also in open 5ths in the right hand (5th system b.2 in my edition) do I hold the low F with my thumb in the left hand to avoid blurring with the sustaining pedal? Otherwise it would sound a bit of a mess! Up to this point the fingering is quite logical and natural to me (once figured out!) If needed I'll upload a pdf of the horrid page, though I'm sure you'll know which bit I mean :P

Thank you!
Pieces I'm polishing at the mo:
Debussy reflections on the water (images)
Chopin ballade no.3 op.47
Liszt/Wagner Isolde liebestod

haven't worked this (don't play a lot of prokofiev myself, though like some of his pieces).
here is what i believe you are referring to. not my fingering, from a reference copy i have from a collection of sonatas and pieces a pianist i'm familiar with worked out. generally i agree with his logic and suggestion but of course you'll need to see if they work.

i personally seldom use anyone's or any editions suggested fingerings unless it is the only way or it follows standard fingering approach conventions, but i have to feel it out myself and usually as i work up a piece those may change since you will likely find better ways to finger it as you get the speed up or learn the music better and figure out even better ways to do it.

Thanks Vistitor! Yes it was :) I'll have a gander when I have more time, though on paper they seem quite logical (first set of chromatic thirds is what I do anyway). It confirms that I need to hold the low F with the LH at least, which bizarrely makes it easier as it forces me to use only 4 fingers!
