Piano sheet has no pedal symbol at all - is that normal?
on: June 14, 2016, 01:20:01 PM
Hello,
There are two piano pieces that I am learning at the moment and I am confused whether pedals are used at all in these pieces. I feel that the sustain pedal is used but the sheets don't mention it at all.
The two pieces are La Valse d'Amelie (Yann Tiersenn) and Nuvole Bianche (Ludovico Einaudi).
Let's take the Nuvole Bianche piano sheets for example (
https://silasvh.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/ludovico-einaudi-nuvole-bianche-bewerkt-door-joel-biffin.pdf
).
As you can see, there is no sustain pedal symbol (

) anywhere.
I would appreciate your input on this.
Thanks,
Shailen

the pedal is a tool you utilize as needed to get the sound/effect you want. Pedal indications are more 'suggestions' than anything else most of the time, there are some modern composers that are very strict /adamant of the type of pedaling (or clearly indicate no pedal).
play it with pedal, play it without. go with what your ear tells you sounds better. heck i have music w/ pedal indications and i choose not to in spots at times, and i have others w/ no indications and i'm pedaling all over the place if the music sounds better with it.

It's all up to your own interpretation. Very subjective topic!
Cheers,
Jason
