Help with Alberti-bass in Haydn Piano Sonata!
on: August 28, 2016, 09:00:57 PM
Hi everyone.

So, as I already said in another thread that I justed posted minutes ago, I decided to take a break from intermediate repertoire and choose some pieces which are under my current level which I never played when I was younger. I chose Bach's Invention No. 3 in D major, Chopin's Prelude in B minor, Op. 28, No. 6, Mendelssohn's Song without Words in E major, Op. 30, No. 3 and Haydn's Piano Sonata in C major, Hob. XVI:1. Now, I started the piece last tuesday all at once and I technically finished the Chopin and Mendelssohn last friday. Bach not yet finished technically or musically and will take the longest (surprise, surprise... :-\) and Haydn is almost there, however, I am still experiencing some trouble with mostly the first movement.

The first movement is very compact (yet, the development section is constructed in an incredebly clever way) and the left hand accompaniment consists mostly of a simple Alberti-bass. Now, I've always had trouble playing a clear and light Alberti-bass but because this piece should be easy I want to absolutely perfect it this time. The problem is that I keep feeling like my fingers are doing to much work because not all fingers are equally strong the Alberti-bass sounds louder at places (mostly the thumb).

What could I be doing wrong and what can I do to improve it? If it's desirable I'll try and upload a video of my playing tomorrow. It's just that right now the accompanimant doesn't sound like an accompaniment. It sounds more like an exhausted runner trying to keep up with the right hand!!!

Thanks in advance for helping!

BW,
Marijn

I've often found Josh Wrights Youtube lessons helpful, including this one on Alberti bass.

Hi Marjin,

There can be something wrong with your technique. I can give you some tips, however I'll recommend you to take lessons if you haven't already, with this. Technique is mostly personal and independent, and it cannot be taught in class.

I can predict the main thing that is wrong with your technique.

You are playing from your fingers

Anyone opinions?

Natsu

You may wish to try paralell sets. You may wish to have a look about them in the book "fundamentals of piano practice" (Chuang Shang) - freedownload. May be you have something about searching here, in piano forum.
Best wishes

From my still limited knowledge, I had the same suspicion based on this part of the OP

When I was self-taught as a child, simply given my grandmother's books, I ended up playing mostly Alberti bass because the books featured a lot of Clementi.  I know that I approached it in a fingery way, with a still hand.  I then didn't play piano for 35 years and set out to learn how playing is actually done, and also didn't touch Alberti bass during that time.  What I already know is that the playing is also done with the hand and arm, with movements in that area which to an extent will transport the fingers.  I agree with 109natsu that you should work with your teacher on this.  If you don't have a teacher, you need to get to this somehow - a teacher who works with you, observes you, and guides you, is always preferable, assuming it's a good teacher who knows what he/she is doing. :)
