One of my favorite preludes. I read somewhere once that this was also Rachmaninoff's favorite prelude. It was inspired by a painting of Arnold Böcklin called 'Die Heimkehr'.
I'll start by saying that I really like the voicing. The melody is very well heard all through the piece, without sacrificing the harmony.
The first part is a bit too fast for me, and needs more rubato. I think it should be more dark and solemn, almost 'grave'.
The middle part is very good. A lot of pianists get too carried away with the muddy chords and lose the octave melody, but you kept it together. Nevertheless, maybe you could still give it a bit more 'movement', especially near the C major climax.
The part before the grace note cadenza is great. Again, you didn't lose your senses, which left lots of room for the melody to be heard. Regarding the cadenza itself - I've never heard anybody play it like that. Mostly people reach a climax right at its beginning and after that just kind of wing through the rest, but you gave it a real narrative. It's not what I expected, but I liked it a lot.
The ending was better than the beginning. It was a bit more free and romantic. Maybe you should play the beginning more similar to the end (while still keeping the ending more freestyle than the beginning).
Anyway, great job. The recording itself is also very good.
P.S
While writing this I googled your name and listened to some more of your recordings. I especially liked your 'Jeux d'Eau'.
