What piece should I learn next?
on: December 21, 2016, 04:42:55 AM
I started playing a year ago and I'm not seeing a teacher (though I plan to start soon), but so far I've managed to learn pieces like For Elise, Canon in D, Bach's Prelude in C and Chopin's Prelude no. 15 ('Raindrop'), among others of his easier preludes. I am very enthusiastic when it comes to playing the piano, so I'd like to learn something challenging yet accesible.
I'm trying to build up a repertoire. Maybe some 'easy' or intermediate pieces by Shumann, Beethoven, Schubert, Liszt, Wagner, Bach...
Thanks

Check out the Schubert Waltzes I believe there are 3 sets, I don't know all of them but the 36 Waltzes D.365 have some really nice ones.
I think they are all pretty much on youtube for you to listen too
[ Invalid YouTube link ]schubert+d.365
And the scores are available on IMSLP
https://imslp.org/wiki/36_Originalt%C3%A4nze,_D.365_(Schubert,_Franz
)
They are all roughly around a minute each.
I think In terms of technical building I would point you to Bach, the well known notebooks of Fugues and Preludes have a solid foundation for making a competent piano player.
In terms of the other composers, accessibility to their repertoire for the level you are at, I think Schumann and Schubert, possibly some Beethoven. You will unfortunately find very little by Liszt, and I don't know anything about Wagner - in terms of piano compositions unfortunately.

1) J.S Bach zweistimmige inventionen
2) Teleman kleine fantasien
3) Bartok mikrokosmos (if you like Bartok and is a nerd)
4) Mozart sonantinen

Schumann has his 'Scenes from Childhood' as well as his 'Album for the Young' which are really accessible. There's also a book by Bärenreiter entitled 'Liszt: Easy Piano Pieces & Dances" which includes some lighter/easier Liszt pieces which are very nice to play and not too hard.
