Wanting to play a song that's too hard
on: January 07, 2017, 04:57:42 PM
Hello!
I'm a solid grade 8 now, but I didn't start playing too long ago, so even though I'm a grade 8, technically, but am I good enough? I want to learn Waltz in E flat major op.18 by Chopin but I started playing a year and a half ago. I learned all of my grades but I only took grade 3, grade 5, and grade 8, and I passes 3 and 5 with full marks but grade 8 I only just passed. What is your opinion? I'm supposed to be learning the for a spring concert in April for my school. For reference i've learned Op. 64 No. 2 with a little difficulty a few months ago- Thanks for any replies! I practice 3 hours a day, if i do that until late April will I be ok?

I don't believe in that grade and exam ****.  but if you're under a teacher and he/she has a plan for your future, and you are making progress, follow the plan.
I tried two pieces that were too hard for me; I bought the sheet music in 82.  Some years I practiced 3 hours a year, but since I quit working in 08 I've been getting an hour three or five times a week.  I've about got one of them down - under 10 mistakes in twenty some pages, and those not the same ones all the time.  The other, I've had to put it off to concentrate on the first one. It takes over an hour to get through 20+ pages one time, much less concentrate on some hard part I am particularly having trouble with.
So if you have  a long attention span go ahead and attempt things that are too hard for you.  But you'll make more progress with your teacher's plan, I imagine.
