Improvisation suite
on: February 10, 2017, 03:52:29 AM
A short three-part improvised suite of contrasting material.

Part one: Improvisation romantica - a warmup improvsation (literally, the piano room was freezing cold!) video and audio

Part two: audio only https://soundcloud.com/andrew-wright-35/improvisation-melancholia

Part three: audio only https://soundcloud.com/andrew-wright-35/improvisation-rustica

Lot of great ideas and exploration of related tonal colors explored and fleshed out here. I think you have some ideas that would work remarkably well with little alteration as cadenza for pieces calling for them but also could be interjected into some other concert works.

really enjoyable. Had fun listening to where you were taking things. 8)

Thanks visitor. The first one is maybe a bit of a generic "me" improvisation, but I'm quite fond of the other two.

Fixed typos. Sorry, tablet and failed autocorrect issues.
I did find myself enjoying the last two a bit more as well but cool stuff in 1st one too :)

Very enjoyable, Andrew, as always. No surprises that I like the first one, as it is closer to the touch you had a couple of years ago, and which I still prefer now. The chord sequences are pretty, and you didn't use your trademark diminisheds quite as often as before.  I managed to brave the rigours of Soundcloud (it still twists up my iPad) to hear the other two, and found the third a jolly romp, rather as I imagine Percy Grainger might have improvised. The second I couldn't grasp at all, I'm afraid.

I watched your hands very carefully in the video to see how your fingers were striking but the Wright effect might have succumbed to the cold, as it was not evident in this piece. Thanks for helping to keep the improvisation board alive.

The third one is quite Graingeresque, now that you mention it. I think I had Grieg's Wedding Day at Troldhaugen in the back of my mind. The second one speaks of bleakness, foreboding and brief hope snuffed out by the conclusion, but I think it is quite abstract. There was a conscious bias towards lower registers. I enjoyed the cocktail warmup improv.

The melancholia is well-done and thematic.  That first part very dark, but very intriguing as well.  You put some fine, if not sublime, touches there in the deep bass.

I have to say, Andrew, if your creativity took on the character of Grainger, it would be a tragedy!

I hope you post more here in the improv section.  Once I get my piano tuned again, or rather have a tuned piano at my disposal, I would like to post again.

Thanks.  :) The melancholia is my favourite of the three, but the last one I also feel is quite near to being a finished miniature in its own right. I'll try to post more often!
