Works like Mephisto waltz Liszt
on: February 19, 2017, 10:28:44 PM
Hey all,

I would like to play a work of similar difficulty as Mephisto Waltz, and would of gladly play itself, but I am uncomfortable about the pretext of the piece and story behind it.

I am thinking of doing Rhapsody 6 instead.

What are others you can suggest?

Piece by Liszt and similar difficulty, little bit harder or little bit easier.

Thank you

This seems to be in line with moderately more difficult Liszt pieces more or less, it's super cool/fun.

Thank you, sounds interesting. Do you any Liszt pieces that I could look into as well?

Try Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 (or 6 or 12 or 15 or something like that), Czardas Macabre or one of   etudes (like Un Sospiro or La Campanella).
Practicing:
Bach Chromatic Fantasie and Fugue
Beethoven Sonata Op. 10 No. 1
Shostakovich Preludes Op. 34
Scriabin Etude Op. 2 No. 1
Liszt Fantasie and Fugue on BACH

How about one of his 2 legends? They're really nice.

BTW, I don't really understand - what don't you like about the story of the piece?

What's wrong with the Mephisto Waltz? Not into demons? It's just music.

Try the Spanish Rhapsody by Liszt. As virtuosic as the Mephisto, but I happen to think it is more interesting... Hungarian Rhapsodies are all good. I don't know how much more difficult of a piece you would want than the mephisto, but the Dante sonata is always there... ;D

Poems of Ecstasy – Scriabin’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

The great early 20th-century composer Alexander Scriabin left us 74 published opuses, and several unpublished manuscripts, mainly from his teenage years – when he would never go to bed without first putting a copy of Chopin’s music under his pillow. All of these scores (220 pieces in total) can now be found on Piano Street’s Scriabin page. Read more
