how to scan 10 X 12" Debussy score
on: June 26, 2017, 01:21:31 AM
Does anyone have experience with scaning a score of Debussy's Preludes that's 10 X 12" dimensions?  I have low vision and need to scan scores so I can print them out in very large (24: C 36:) paper.

You have probably already thought of this, but my suggestion would be to take the score to a local office printing company.  They have a large scanner bed that can accommodate large paper.  If you want to use A home printer, You might look to purchase one with a larger scanner  bed. You can do a search for 'printer with large scanner'  to see the options.

You are probably not aware that glasses can only work at correcting visual problems from issues with the FRONT of the eye.

A large number of visual problems cannot be corrected just by changing eyeglasses;  particularly in adults, diabetic retinopathy,  glaucoma, etc.

Sadly, this is a very common misconception about visual improvement

If you have a good digital camera, you could also try photographing the score and printing out the resulting picture.  Some cameras (not all!) can do very well at that.

My HP printer will scan a page that big.  10 x 12 isn't that much.  It won't copy it unless I set it to reduce, but it will scan.

Alternatively, maybe you can download an image?  It might be public domain on IMSLP.  Debussy was late 1800s, right?

Everyone's replies to my question abut scanning oversized score are very welcome.  Except "c_minor" who was just plain rude & unkind.
I stopped playing piano for 20 years, but found I couldn't deny playing music any longer.  Like Peter Serkin, I heard a composition by Bach that made it imperative for me to return to playing.
HP has a (somewhat) affordable entry-leverl large format printer that's not meant for big volume nor involved color jobs.  So that dedicated printer (24" width) needs a scanner.  I would consider the photo shoot idea, but would probably need a tripod of some kind.  I'll check prices for large format scan at Office Depotr.  When I had ONE page of Chopin Scherzo #3 printed out @ 24 X 36 it cost $20, so one entire Scherzo would be $400.  Hmmmmm.  I'm good at checking the math of this "sizing up score" project.  So far, the DIY with home machines comes out ahead.
Next I'll try a "live chat" with HP & hope their tech consultant can help.  Thanks again!!!

I don't think that any replies you receive that state you should just get a new pair of glasses are intended to be rude and unkind.....  they just come from people who think glasses can correct everything. I know about all of this, as I had severe visual problems as a child that  could not be corrected by different lenses.,...  but I heard more times than I can remember, "why don't you have your eyes checked and get better glasses".

The statement was not meant to be unkind  but just based on a common misconception that a better prescription corrects everything.   As an adult I can tolerate the statement better, but as a child it was really tough to hear when I knew how false it was but did not have the self-confidence to point out the error.

I don't know where the OP lives, but in the US a public library might be an option.

Before you buy something, go here:

and see if you can do something with these PDFs.

Thank you dogperson. Indeed, I was not aware that glasses cannot correct every vision problem (my mother and grandmother both have glaucoma, and they wear glasses, so I thought that glasses somehow helped improve vision).

Purchase an app called tiny scanner pro i have it for an ios and for an android device and i currently use it to scan my scores and various other documents labels on large boxes etc
It will convert the photo you take with the smartphone camera into a black and white pdf file you can upload to a cloud drive or email to yourself
It allows for some basic  edits to image as well
Best 5 dollars i have ever spent, quality of the image will depend on phone camera resolution, i find samsung and sony phones have best onboard optics and image processing inards. ie you'll have crisp images if resolution is 12mp or more
It essentially turns the mobile device into a pocket "bookeye" archive scanner
I have several scan apps,.none work as well.or give the results of tinyscanner pro

Reg is free but to really do any volume and unlock the best features, get pro
Ie write up (explains w examples and lists some features such as chaning size etc)

I have used it to scan very large.format scores including 10 x 12 etc

Thanks so much, visitor!  I downloaded the pro Version  to use with my iPhone  and tested it on a few pages of my book.   Indeed, it does a great job

Camera, using ScanTailor for post.

ScanTailor is specifically made for using a camera to "scan" documents.  It is free (GPL3 license).

You might also want to check out the following site, especially if you are planning to do a lot of this type of work

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
