I charge $7 for a 30 minute lesson... I don't have any special certification or anything yet...

I charge $40 for a one hour private lesson, without that ARCT certificate. But I work in the Boca Raton area, Florida, where this kind of rate is normal in most music schools.

I charge $7.00 for a 30 minute lesson, and $14.00 for a 60 minute lesson. I know of some piano teachers who charge $10.00 for a 30 minute lesson, and $20.00 for a 60 minute lesson. I don't have a certificate, and was wondering how a person would go about earning one? Does anyone have any information on a teaching certificate?

sounds like you are teaching in Canada?

I charge $38/hour in Canada.   If you are part of a Registered Music Teacher's Association, there is a minimum fee that they recommend teachers charge in order to keep up a standard.

I believe if you don't have an ARCT or any other diploma, there is a recommended fee for student teachers.    I can't remember what it is, but I think it differs with each teacher association depending where you live.

Perhaps, you could find out what others in your area are charging and charge a similar rate based on your experience?   I believe experience counts as much as a diploma.

Hi there,
I am a travelling teacher and I currently charge $120/month for a 45 min lesson. My studio is full. I have 40 students. I do not know where you live but I have to make a living. I am in NFMC and MTNA and we have to charge a minimum of $60 per month. Actually , I am giving myself a raise in September to $130/ month.
Good luck and please if you are a proffessional give your self a raise.

I started teaching about 4 years ago full time and I still don't have much students.  I got my bachelor and masters degree in piano performance in CA and now I live and teach in Japan.

My rate depends on the level of students.  My lowest fee is 120,000 yen per month.  That's roughly 120 dollars for an hour lesson (probably less).  Then once the students get better and goes up to the level of about Beethoven sonatas and Chopin etudes I charge 150,000 yen.  And beyond that level and college students I charge 200,000 yen.

Once my name and reputation builds up I will charge more.  I am very confident of my teaching and I know that my students improve.  I know that I deserve more than I charge right now but I have to wait until people know my name by word of mouth.  I gotta start somewhere.

I charge $48.00 per month.  My husband teaches guitar, and charges $52.00 per month.  These are 30 minute weekly lessons.  Neither of us has a teaching certificate.  These rates are pretty comparable for our area.  We are in Arkansas.  It seems most private music instructors around here charge anywhere from $8.00 to $15.00 for half hour lessons.  We prefer to charge by the month, with the student paying on the first lesson of the month.  That holds the student's spot, and ensures us of our income.  We have our payment/attendance policy in writing, and every student gets a copy.

wow that's a real good price..
I get charged $60 per hour... so $240-300 per month? (no make-up lessons unless my teacher cancels it)

I am thinking about teaching beginners (I'm a high schooler at the moment)... does $20 per 30 minutes sound decent?  Also I heard that most teachers that travel to teach in the students' homes charge for the gas money.

That sounds about right. I am not sure about the gas money though. My teacher is a steal though. She is the dean at the college and has a doctorate in performance. She usually doesn't bring on extra students during the summer but, she was really impressed with my playing ability.

hi guys! thanks for answering my question!
it seems that in the U.S. you guys charge less for an hour lesson... though the conversion rate into Canadian dollars would equal the same, if not more.

in canada.. in my area.. which is kind of higher-class... most teachers with certificates charge between 30-40$ Canadian an hour.  so.. a half-hour would be between 15-20$.

i dont have my ARCT, but im going to take Music in university.. for teaching, so hopefully that'll be qualifying enough!
thanks !!!
