stereotypical mystic/fairy-tale piano piece?
on: August 21, 2017, 09:36:24 PM
I'm searching for a piece that you really connect to fairytales. I thought of a piece that perhabs uses six-five chords etc. I assume no classical composer wrote in that style and unfortunatly youtube could not help me this time to find that style of music.
Looking forward to your answers!

Frank Bridge and John Ireland, particularly the latter, wrote several pieces to do with mysticism and fairy tales. Ireland was heavily influenced, for example in his "The Scarlet Ceremonies", by the writings of Arthur Machen and Celtic folklore in general. Bridge wrote a "Fairy Tale Suite" for piano, and other pieces such as "The Dew Fairy" and "Gargoyle".

E. Grieg

Grieg also did an elve's dance and a gnome's dance for piano which I haven't heard.

If you want a specific example, Rachmaninoff's Etudes-Tableaux, Op. 39 No.6 in A Minor is supposed to be about Little Red Riding Hood. Also Ravel's Ma Mére l'Oye is a pretty obvious choice. It contains five pieces, all of which are about fairy tales.

Prokofiev wrote a ballet about "Cinderella". He arranged for piano some pieces of the ballet :

First of all, thanks for all answers!
Especially Ted! Bridge and Ireland are what I was looking for.
