What songs should I play?
on: January 16, 2005, 07:44:00 PM
Hi, I'm 13 years old and had been playing since i'm 3 years old. I've pretty much played all the songbook that my mom had bought me...and we have about 50 books. I want something more challenging for me to play. Please give me a ny advise to what song is more of a challenge but not too hard that only professionals can play. Thnx!

The dictionary's a pretty old book, and I don't see anyone getting tired of it...

song (n.)
1 : the act or art of singing
2 : poetical composition
3a : a short musical composition of words and music

You know, some of you might be a little harsh this time.

A) the poster is 13 and a newbie here

B) the poster is apparently playing out of songbooks

C) you might not really have explained well what you mean.

For the poster:  it is a custom on this forum to call any piece of music a piece, but reserve the term "song" for those pieces that have words.

Now a question for you purists:  I play the vocalises of Bordogni fairly often.  These are vocal works, but they have no words.  Am I allowed to call them songs?  I'm torn.  What to do, what to do.  I feel an overpowering urge to clap between movements coming on.

TimR:  tactful and thorough, the best kind of answer!  It's so easy to forget the bigger picture.  I laughed at your clapping comment and wanted to throw out there--not to you, because you "get it"--but to the world at large, that I love it when people clap between movements.  GASP.  Why?  Because it means you got someone to come to your concert who's never been to a classical event.  That's important and pretty difficult, and how successful have we all been with that?

- I apologize if I offended anybody.  I should make it clear that my "harsh" comments, including the dictionary entry, were reserved for the person who posted a pretty much meaningless reply to my stoic and stuck-up comment.

- Personally I would be inclined to call those works "songs."  Definitions 1 and 2, respectively, are "the act or art of singing," and a "poetical composition."  They're a little more lax than the third, the one I'm a stickler about.

- I'm a little confused about the point of your comment regarding clapping...

Just humor.  I try never to disagree without at least some light heartedness.  I never deliberately give offense, though I'm sure I sometimes err.
