Guitar duet
on: January 17, 2005, 07:14:49 AM
Hey guys, my roommate's just starting to learn the guitar, and I was wondering if there is any good music we could play together that's fairly simple on the guitar end. Any ideas?

Hi Ndiin

Don't know if you're still following this but here goes.

I'm assuming you're asking about classical literature.

In general there is very little classical literature for keyboard and guitar.  The two instruments have many of the same strengths and weaknesses and so it's not in ideal combination.

One choice would be to get some music for a solo instrument plus basso continuo, and play the continuo portion on the piano and have the guitarist play the solo.  The range of the guitar is sufficient that material for any treble instrument should be workable.  Such music would not speak to the true strengths of the guitar, but it would be easy and would work.

There is a comparatively larger body of repertoire for guitar plus wind instruments in various combinations.  You could explore some of that and play the wind parts on the piano.  Obviously that doesn't speak to the strengths of the piano, though.

In popular and jazz music such a combination is more common, with the guitar playing manly rhythm and bassline and melody on the piano.  These styles are chiefly improvisational however and the amount of sheet music that is effective when playable as written for such a combination is vanishingly small.
