Need Help Rachmaninoff Op 32 No 10 (reading ties!)
on: November 04, 2017, 03:06:37 PM
Hi all

Hoping some of you can help me with some reading that is hurting my brain (and eyes). I have decided to tackle Rachmaninoff Op 32 No 10. Its slightly beyond what I would normally play but I'm giving myself a 6 month challenge on this one. I find playing it much easier than reading it.

The part that is really getting me is reading the ties. I think I may actually be making this harder on myself because I think in a few cases the ties are actually being handled by the sustain pedal rather than the hands. The part I am having an issue with is in the image below:

 https://s1248.photobucket.com/user/Dergeist66/media/rach_zpsgvt5neyq.png.html?sort=3&o=1

Bars 2, 3, and 4 (in the image). What I am doing now is (treble clef):

Bar 2 second triplet: C# not played (tied)
Bar 2 third triplet:  G not played (tied)
Bar 3 first triplet: C#, G, and B not played (tied)
Bar 3 third triplet: F# not played (tied)
Bar 3 fourth triplet: G not played (tied)
Bar 4 First triplet: C#, G, B, not played (tied) (Bass clef nothing played tied)

Does that seem right? Sorry if this is awfully remedial but the score is a bit hard on the eyes.

Any insight is appreciated.

Tim

Hi Tim! I think you got it all right :) Specifically in the part from your screenshot all the parts you say are tied should be held by the hand. Pedal will help but try to work make sure you hold down with your fingers as well.

It's a beautiful piece. Good luck with learning it.
