Rachmaninov Sonata # 1--cuts in 3rd mct.?
on: January 01, 2018, 09:07:28 AM
Does anyone know if Rachmaninov made substantial cuts to the 3rd mct. of his Sonata # 1 in d minor?  Also, whether there are scores available of both orignal version and possibly revised version of this sonata?  Thanks for any info on this question--I'm considering learning the piece and would like to know of different versions of the score.

I'm not aware that its fate ever paralleled that of his second sonata in that respect but I'm not 100% certain of this; I'm sure someone will write in with information!

There's a youtube performance of this sonata with comments about such a cut in the 3rd mvt. and the person writing the comment seems knowledgeable.  Apparently a critic made such a remark about the 3rd mct. that Rachmaninov revised it by 2 1/2 pages reduction.  I'm hoping to find perhaps someone's dissertation or article addressing the various revisions Rachmaninov made in his piano works.  Sometimes people do write a scholarly presentation on such a topic.

Per the link below, Rachmaninoff did make approx 10 min of cuts to the Sonata.  The footnote contains a citation which may be useful

Thank you, dogperson, for the link giving history of Rachmaninov's sonata no. 1.  That info confirms there was a substantial cut made.  So next I'm wondering if there are 2 versions of scores for this sonata--before cuts and after cuts.  I'll check IMSLP to see what's offered there.
