Une Barque sur l'ocean
on: January 26, 2018, 03:53:12 PM
Hello people,
I am new here and i got a question. I've been playing the piano for like 8 years at this moment. I just finished Liszt's Liebestraum. Recently I just heard Une Barque sur l'ocean of Ravel. This piece just impressed me how beautiful it is! First of all, do u think that I am ready for this Ravel piece? I know u can't really determine it without seeing me playing the piano, but in terms of difficulty? Furthermore I have problems with my fingers... The fourth page of Une Barque sur l'ocean gives me problems. I can play it, but i make a lot of errors. Can anyone give me tips for fingerings? I especially have problems with the part where i have to shift my hand in order to play the keys. I marked the parts I mean. Hopefully someone can help me, and sorry for my bad English!
Greetings

I haven't played it so I can't help you with that specific part, sorry.
Nor can anybody tell if you're "ready" for it (what does that mean?) because of what you've played. A great performance of a medium-difficulty piece may indicate higher skill than an OK performance of a liszt etude or the like. But either way, I say go for it. It's one of my favorites also and if you love it enough you will put the time into it that it needs. And if you aren't ready for it, hey not a problem put it away for a year or so and you've stretched and improved yourself technically.
You might have seen one of my videos without knowing it was that nut from the forum

Its a great piece! Once its in your fingers it will feel more natural.  It'll flow like water (ha).  but the notes are really hard to read so i suggest going really slow and taking time to read each individual note.  You don't have to do it many times, just enough to know what it sounds like.

for the fingering in that section, i go 1 - 5 for the shift, then from the lowest note 1 2 3 1 2 3 5 . . .

Also, the arpeggios are unrelenting so you might feel some burn.  Rather than trying to play it fast, focus more on keeping the tone even and make sure you can hear every note.  All those notes only sound impressive when it doesn't sound like notes.

good luck!
There's no wrong interpretation.  Its just that some are better than others.
