Rachmaninoff recommendations?
on: February 07, 2018, 11:43:00 PM
I'm looking to study some Rachmaninoff to try to incorporate his utter genius into my jazz playing, especially w/ arranging and playing ballads.

What are your favorite works by him? I've heard his choral works are good. Listening to Vespers right now.

Prelude Op 32. No 10
Most of Op 39, but especially Op 39 No 5 (HARD)
Most of Op 33 (C minor/major and G minor are quite approachable. C# minor is much more difficult, but harmonically daring)
The Second Sonata (HARD)

Edit: swapped out the numbers for Op 33 with the keys, since the numbers are inconsistent

I love most everything that he wrote ...

A few specific pieces that I really love?

Preludes Op. 23 No. 2, 5 and 7, and Op. 32 No. 2, 10, 12, and especially 13.

Etudes-Tableaux Op. 33 in Am, Cm, Dm, and E-flat. Op. 39 in C minor, D, E-flat minor, and Am.

In my opinion, no one wrote better piano concertos than Rachmaninoff.

Piano Concerto No. 3.

Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini.

Isle of the Dead.
Practicing:
Bach Chromatic Fantasie and Fugue
Beethoven Sonata Op. 10 No. 1
Shostakovich Preludes Op. 34
Scriabin Etude Op. 2 No. 1
Liszt Fantasie and Fugue on BACH

Speaking of the 2nd symphony it actually inspired a lot of the music from the dark knight
Live large, die large.  Leave a giant coffin.
