Competition repertoire suggestions
on: November 27, 2018, 09:32:03 AM
Hi everyone,

So I'm looking for about 10minutes of repertoire to fit in the 60 minute recital stage of the competition.
The other pieces I'm doing in this stage are:
Beethoven op. 111
Chopin Polonaise op. 44
and a commissioned work around 6-7 minutes.

Unfortunately my Schoenberg Op 25 suite wouldn't fit due to the commissioned piece, and I'm a bit stuck in choosing something. Any recommendations welcome, even better if you list a few.

Thanks.

Can you choose completely freely in this round, except for the commissioned piece?
What are you doing in the other rounds?

Spontaneous thought: Webern Variations?

Still Three visions [summer and being the most often performed or famous of the set, but as a trio very effective small collection ] hints of Debussy mixed w what i feel is a mix of  Delius and Gershwinesque vibes

The only set requirement is the commissioned piece, as well as a major work of at least 20mins, which is the op. 111. Other than that there are no limitations.

Round 1 i'd play bach p+f in bflat bk1, beethoven op90 and Chopin op10.1.

Round 2 would be Haydn hob xvi:37 and Rachmaninoff corelli variations op.42.

and round 4 would be the concerto, beethoven 3.

That webern is a great piece, I've listened to it once but I'll have a more in depth look at it.

You’ve done it again... I was already a Stills fan because of you, and now I’ve added Kapralova to the ‘must play’ list.  And my teacher wonders why I don’t play more Bach 😊

Kapralova, interesting history, of note is how it intersects with Martinu (marriage etc), like Sara Davis Buechner says,  the saying the good die young sadly has a lot of credence, no where recently more so than w Kapralova, her death at such a young age is probably one of the great tragedies and a defining blow to modern classical music (of the time) and probably in terms of potential, for decades to come.

good read here, her music is well worth exploration and playing, discovery etc, i know a pianist that recently recorded some of her, do check out this recent (below) for her album release not too long ago

A Scriabin Sonata? At least a few of them are under 10 minutes, and they're all amazing, if challenging ...
Practicing:
Bach Chromatic Fantasie and Fugue
Beethoven Sonata Op. 10 No. 1
Shostakovich Preludes Op. 34
Scriabin Etude Op. 2 No. 1
Liszt Fantasie and Fugue on BACH

Personally, I think Beethoven's final three sonatas are not competition-pieces. There are simply too much room for drastically different opinions. Of course, all Beethoven sonatas are more controversial than, say, Mozart's, but his final three sonatas are incredibly difficult to perform in a competition.

But, since you have already chosen it, it's okay.

If there's no restriction, I would play Mendelssohn's Variations Serieuses. It's a tough piece, but it's impressive if you play it well. And, although it's very well known, it's a very memorable piece to play in a competition. Even if jurors have different ideas about the piece, it's something they definitely will appreciate.
Pieces I'm working on:
Beethoven op. 109
Chopin Etudes op.10
Tchaikovsky Seasons June & October
Tchaikovsky Russian scherzo op. 1 no. 1
Tchaikovsky concerto 1
Mozart K 488
Rachmaninoff sonata 2
