Con Brio Exams?
on: December 30, 2018, 07:51:08 PM
Hi, anyone familiar with Con Brio exams? I'm trying to figure out how important the program selections are to the judges. I don't know if I'm wrong but my impression is that their approach is for the student to just choose a program they personally love and that a balance of styles/periods isn't as much of a priority? So if I wanted to do an all-Chopin program that would be okay?

Interesting concept!
I was not familiar with this exam system before you posted, so I can’t definitely answer your question. It does look like there are no rules re variety. Did you see the contact us section? There is an individual email and phone number for each region. I would hope they could give you a definite answer.
If you decide to do this, I hope you will post your impression when you finish. In particular, I would be interested in the level of comment detail provided by the examiner, and whether it was one or multiple. This could be useful feedback but it’s not cheap!

Okay, I emailed per your suggestion. I didn't before because I wasn't sure I'd get a straight answer. I was going to prepare for a Trinity exam last year, but life got in the way and I couldn't prepare to completion. I had emailed my local Trinity rep about program choices and he kept it vague and said there was no requirement though I tried via a few emails to ask in different ways. But when I started to prepare with a wonderful new piano teacher I found in my area, she reworked my program because it wasn't balanced enough and she wanted me to choose from her suggested selections that would be better choices for various reasons. She was a piano professor and had adjudicated many competitions and was very familiar with Trinity. I guess I'll see what the reply I get back and that's all I'll have to go off, unless I can get any additional info here.
