MIDI playing to create a score
on: February 13, 2019, 07:42:55 PM
Does anybody use software to create a written score by playing onto a midi keyboard. If you do what do you use. I don't need masses of complicated features - just something which is simple to learn and use which will do the job.

Try a few of them. I've tried all kinds of things over the years, but I found them all hard to learn. Then again I find everything hard to learn =)

I don't use MIDI but that's because I don't play accurately enough so it doesn't save any time. I have tried it. I see people do it and if they're adept enough players and have quantize set properly it can work.
I saw someone use Cakewalk and input the book for a musical that way, very impressive.
You don't need a full DAW. It will work but the learning curve is very steep.
The easiest way is a notation program. Pretty much all notation programs allow this. I use Noteworthy and it works fine.
The hardest is a full featured DAW. Reaper, Pro Tools, something like that.
In between are programs like Anvil Studio that do something in between. I've used Anvil for this and it worked okay. It has a good quantize feature. The problem you have when inputting with a MIDI keyboard is that if your timing is slightly off, you may intend a quarter note but the program detects an 8th with 4 dots.
