Excellent Sight-Reading Material Resource
on: June 11, 2019, 11:13:09 PM
This website offers a huge pile of free sight-reading material, from absolute beginner to "level four" -- although I don't know how it defines level 4. In any case perhaps you will find it useful.

Yeah - I'd like to know as well. I didn't really find anything excellent about it...

...other than the fact that it's a brilliant depiction of what web-sites used to look like in 1997.

How can it possibly matter what the OP’s reason is for thinking this website is excellent?  None of us would accept any reason at face value: we would go look at it and decide for ourselves. (Just as I did, PP did and I’m sure others have as well).  Any rationale by the OP is not  not needed and serves no positive purpose.

Half true, I would say.

If we go there (I did) and agree it's worthwhile, then you're probably right.

If we go there and don't agree (like me) then it's worth asking the OP the question, because maybe I missed something.

It is a klutzy website though, all that drilling down and clicking.

Obviously it mattered to me, or I would not have asked.

It is excellent because it is well organized.  It is excellent because it addresses skills we need in sight reading in a good order.  It is excellent because it has bright colours and I like bright colours.
The OP is also considering teaching, and a good exercise for teaching is to assess teaching and learning materials, and ask just such questions.
But above all, I was curious what the OP considered to be excellent about it.  There is nothing at all wrong with asking questions when we have questions.

Some of these negative responses  ::)

It is a good resource for some free sheet music and the scores themselves are all quite well presented. I've used sheets from this site over the years for lessons. Given that it is free that makes it an excellent resource to go through, pick and choose what is relevant it costs you nothing but your time.

Exactly.

There is a difference between adequate/useful, and excellent.  The claim of excellent has not been supported.

This was recommended as ‘excellent’ by  a student at level 2. This level of student will justifiably not have the same analytical skills as a more experienced pianist and may well not be able to distinguish or explain  ‘useful’ vs ‘excellent ‘.  To continue asking for a justification does not seem helpful to anyone: it puts pressure on the OP to justify his choice of words. and more experienced pianists can reach their own conclusions of what adjective to use.

The OP is thinking about becoming a teacher.  One of the the things a teacher does is to assess learning resources.  He might have actually had thoughts about it, and if so, I was genuinely interested.

My colleague and I have released what we think can be a very helpful article on how to organise your piano sight-reading.

Take a look and let us know

/.

So, what exactly is in there?

Don't be shy:  you can probably manage to write a summary in as few as several sentences.

Perhaps even a single sentence.

Might could do.

Yes indeed.

Well,
First of all, we talk about two tasks related to sight-reading. This tasks should be performed before attempting to sight-read the piece.

After that, we talk about the elements of music we should assess when we read and play music.

Subsequently, we created an infographic which somehow structures the process and order of priorities we recommend students to follow while performing sight-reading.

You can read the article and criticise it ferociously, we love academic arguments :)

Good summary.

Actually I already do two tasks before I begin to sight read, and have heard about some elements of music.

Really good stuff, though.
