Tetris Fantasy (vid)
on: June 12, 2019, 05:27:33 PM
I posted this a while back, but I've edited my original video to show both live footage and sheet music simultaneously. Hope you like it!

Theme and variations, encore from informal recital.

All the variations are in the style of different composers.
0.50 Chopin
1.13 Liszt
1.31 Alkan (cf Le Festin d'Esope)
1.57 Rachmaninov
2.41 Thalberg (cf coda of Moses Fantasy)

this is tons of fun love the editing, appreciate your sharing the music, this is like light desert, there's always room for it, and enjoyable each and every time!, and it leaves itself open to new variations as you cook them up as well!

:)

The variations are somewhat in the style of the composers I'm most at home pastiching, but really there's no reason on principle (other than not wanting to overexploit the gag by making it too lengthy) why I couldn't come up with faux Bach, Mozart or Beethoven variations - maybe even one in the style of a Scriabin miniature would be a nice idea.

It's actually an original Russian folk theme! So I really can't take credit for that part of the piece..

I had a few ideas for a quasi-Beethoven variation today. I was also wondering about a Bach-esque variation in canon form.

I know you are busy and may miss the “Variations on an original Russian folk theme composition contest” posted in the Miscellaneous section.  I hope you will consider entering (you will win  ;D), especially if you add new variations to your work.  I will FULLY understand if you pass on this though.  The just for fun competition is designed ONLY to encourage new compositions and to showcase different ideas on how to make use of a simple melody.  I look forward to hearing more or your variations!! (If you have time to do them, regardless of participation in any competitions.) Thanks.

I've seen the miscellaneous forum thread, but not got round to commenting. I'll post a short pdf of the melody once I'm at home.

I'm not sure the composition in this thread should necessarily be used in the context if we are trying to encourage novice composers, because I'm quite experienced in writing this particular kind of paraphrase and in these specific styles, even if this is more of a novelty item than my usual. I might do fresh variations though.. ;)

I'm motivated by your variations and Bach and I am just a wannabe!  We need inspiration - everyone from beginner to professionals.  If you decide to post in the "JUST FOR FUN competition" thread (I will rename the thread), I think rather than scare people off, you will instead inspire.

"Fresh variations" - Fantastic!!!  I look forward to hearing these if you have time - wherever you decide to post these.   Thanks!
