I am thinking about studying there next year. Any of you go there?  Which schools and teachers are good?

OK? Utrecht is very good for early music but I'm not a Netherlands expert. SORRY. I would be interested to know how you get on though. Just a thought... where is the Hague? (I heard someone who studied there in competition reccently and they were GOOD!)

Just checked with a friend and the Royal Conservatory in The Hague is apparently very good and one of the most prestigious schools they have. Utrecht is also good but is stronger for early music. I don't know whether thay have home pages but in this day and age they really ought to. Happy hunting! ;)

I've applied at both Utrecht and the Hague as well as the Amsterdam Conservatory which is supposed to be the best of the lot.  But the Hague would likely be very good as well.  Utrecht... well my present teacher also teaches there and says the administration is in a mess and practice rooms are scarce.  But she also says all the funding for music schools in the Netherlands is being cut so it might be the same situation elsewhere.  Anyway thanks for your thoughts!

Hi sharon glad you love the piano! Do you have a list of the major conservatoires in the Netherlands. My research involves studying curricula of major international conservatoires so I'd be interested to know which are the TOP schools in Netherlands the ones above are the only real ones I know of. :'(

Hi sharon glad you love the piano! Do you have a list of the major conservatoires in the Netherlands. My research involves studying curricula of major international conservatoires so I'd be interested to know which are the TOP schools in Netherlands the ones above are the only real ones I know of. :'(

Here is a list with conservatoires with links:

Amsterdam: www.cva.ahk.nl
The Hague: www.koncon.nl
Tilburg: www.fontysconservatorium.info
Utrecht: www.hku.nl
Groningen: www.hanze.nl
Maastricht: www.hszuyd.nl
Rotterdam: www.hmd.nl

I would say Amsterdam or The Hague. But my teacher Ton Demmers is also very good, but maybe I will go to Amsterdam or The Hague. I think I could develop myself much better because the students are better than in Tilburg..  And Amsterdam and The Hague are more culture cities I think, so a good environment!
But I'm scared to leave.. it's so hard! My teacher is sooo cool  :)
Does it matter where they teach? I mean, Tilburg is not the prestigious conservatory they have. Amsterdam and The Hague are more international! And higher standards..
Thanks and good luck!

Sharon

There is much interchange of teaching staff these days i think which is good for us students OR bad depending on your teacher. Thanks for your links. I often think there is not actually so much difference between first rank and second ranks schools (except perhaps funding??!) ::)

I'd say you should study in Amsterdam in that case, but to be honest I think it's better to study in another country.
