Need Repertoire Advice for Master of Music Audition
on: February 21, 2020, 12:55:40 AM
I'm applying to top tier grad programs next year and would like your opinions on what kind of pieces are great for ~10 min auditions. Usually the school requires minimum of 3-4 pieces from contrasting periods and 1 virtuosic etude. I'm thinking of:

- a Bach Prelude and Fugue of choice
- a Complete Beethoven Sonata (probably Waldstein or Appasionata)
- a Chopin Ballade or Sonata
- Ravel Gaspard de la Nuit (all mvts)
- one of Chopin Op. 10 Etudes or Liszt Concert/Transcendental Etudes

Only thing certain is the Ravel. Everything else is up in the air and unlearned. I wonder if it'd be better to mix in old pieces instead of keeping everything fresh to be better prepared. Any suggestion or advice is welcome.

Maybe try some more modern music? The oldest piece in there is over 100 years old, and they might appreciate you being more adventurous.

Otherwise, very solid program.

More about how you play rather than what so long as the difficulty  and variety to showcase your technial and interpretive and creative skillset are there
Beyond that it would be a good idea to actually go to the schools and spend a day in and around the practice rooms and grad assistanceship recipient studios what they auditioned with or what advice they might offer given they succeeded and would know the professors acting as gatekeepers at audition, that will give you as targeted /audience specific advice as possible and would be the musical equivalent of tailoring a resume and letter to a specific employer , etc

maybe a 'not so famous' beethoven sonata, like op7 or op10 n3. You should prepare an encore too

Hey we are in the same boat!  My teachers have advised me to bring something that shows "depth."  For instance, an early beethoven sonata, Bach partita, Work by an atonal composer, or similar.  To me your program looks like an amazing undergrad program, meaning that it's flashy and impressive but kind of obvious.

Just my two cents.
