How difficult is Chopin's Andante Spianato and Grande Polonaise Brillante?
on: March 29, 2020, 03:10:13 AM
I have been slowly working my way through Chopin's more difficult works, and am very interested in learning the Andante Spianato/Polonaise. It would be the "biggest" piece I've ever approached, and am wondering whether or not I am technically prepared to learn it to completion, or if there are other works I should study before tackling what is arguably Chopin's most difficult work for solo piano.
Some Chopin pieces I have performed for jury in the past 2 years are:
Etudes opus 10, no. 1 C major (waterfall), no. 2 A minor (chromatic), no. 7 C major
2nd Ballade F major
Berceuse D flat major op. 57
Is the grand polonaise within my reach? If not, what preliminary pieces/exercised should I learn as a preliminary?
Thanks!

The polonaise is very difficult, most would agree it's definitely the hardest polonaise by a fair margin. I'd recommend doing a few more etudes, since they help build a very solid technique which the polonaise requires. I would say maybe also play some of Chopin's significant repertoire, such as his other ballades or scherzos. You could definitely try it though, that never hurts.
